Learning Target 1. I will be able to explain electronegativity and relate it to the trend on the periodic table. 2. I will be able to identify the most reactive metallic element in the periodic table 3. I will be able to identify the most reactive nonmetallic element in the periodic table Atomic Radii The atomic radius of a chemical element is a measure of the size of its atoms, usually the mean or typical distance from the nucleus to the boundary of the surrounding cloud of electrons. Ion • An ion is an atom or a molecule in which the total number of electrons is not equal to the total number of protons, giving the atom or molecule a net positive or negative electrical charge. Ions can be created, by either chemical or physical means, via ionization. Ionic Radii • Ionic radius is the radius of an atom's ion. Electronegativity The ability of an atom in a molecule to attract shared electrons to itself.
