ReVIEW Lecture Capture - Loughborough University

ReVIEW Lecture Capture
What is ReVIEW?
ReVIEW is the name of Loughborough’s lecture capture system. The ReVIEW system will capture
your voice, whatever you are showing on the projector, and, in some rooms, you can also opt in to
record video.
Please note that all recordings made through the ReVIEW lecture capture system are subject
to the Loughborough University IT acceptable use policy and, as such, should not be shared
or distributed outside of the University.
Why use it?
In addition to recording large taught classes and as a revision tool, there are a number of ways that
the ReVIEW lecture capture system can be used to support students with their studies. It can also
be used to support teaching colleagues, as well as students, and even for your own personal
development purposes. You may wish to use it to:





Support students with areas, concepts or topics they find problematic. Having access to a
recording lets students focus on the lecture without being distracted by taking full notes.
With lecture capture they can pause, or repeat sections as many times as they need.
Support students for whom English is not their first language. Students sometimes find
accents or terminology difficult and lecture capture enables familiarisation and a ‘safe’ space
to revisit material.
Support students with special needs. They can add in bookmarks and notes to aid their own
understanding.
Support students that may not be able to attend lectures due to additional activities and/or
sporting commitments (e.g. elite athletes).
Share with colleagues who are picking up on lecture material for subsequent tutorials or
seminars.

How do students access lecture capture recordings?
Once you have made or requested a ReVIEW booking,
a ReVIEW block will appear in the associated module
on Learn. Students can click on this block to access all
recordings.
Note: Recordings will be made available by default, but
can be hidden or restricted if they need to be edited or
are only being used for personal development purposes.

Things to note






Students may not be aware that lectures are being recorded. As the lecture capture
system is based on an opt-in, please ensure that your students are aware of the recordings
in Learn.
ReVIEW bookings will not carry over each year. You will need to make your ReVIEW
bookings for each academic year.
Audio only recording is available. If you only want the system to capture audio, specify
this in the ‘user notes’ field when making a booking.
Recordings can be edited. Recordings can be trimmed at the beginning and/or end, and
specific segments can be removed if required. At this time, it is not possible to edit
recordings and save them as new recordings, but this feature will be available soon.
Analytics are available for every recording. Analytics can indicate which parts of
recording students are revisiting (‘hot spots’) thus identifying key problematic concepts or
areas of difficulty. Knowing these soon after delivery allows revisiting in the next available
session to clarify and ensure students master these before moving on.
Copyright and lecture capture. The UK’s copyright law, the CDPA, allows lecture capture
technology to be used to record a lecture which includes third party material provided the
original work is sufficiently acknowledged and the recording is fair. If you are still unsure and
require further guidance about fair usage, you can contact the University library or your
academic librarian for advice.
