We look forward to your participation in the upcoming Winter Weather Forecasting for Alaska Workshop.
DETAILS:
Cost of the Workshop: $500.00 Per Person
Workshop Duration: 2 1/2 Full Days
Tuition Includes: Instruction & Workbooks
Tuition Does Not Include: Round trip transportation to and from the class-site, food and water for the duration
of the workshop, all personal gear.
OBJECTIVES
This course will focus primarily on winter weather forecasting in Alaska. It will benefit anyone with a strong
interest in weather and forecasting, but will be most beneficial to personnel involved in making mission-critical
weather forecasts in mountainous terrain. This course will begin with some general meteorology as a
foundation for understanding of how the atmosphere works. Orographics and how the mountains interact with
the weather will be explored in-depth. Students will learn how to read and interpret all pertinent weather maps
and computer models, with an emphasis on products available for Alaska. There will be map reading and
forecasting exercises each day to give the students hands-on experience.
LOGISTICS
Presentations in the classroom will be supplemented by “live” looks at weather maps via the Internet.
Laptops with wireless Internet capability for each student are required for completing the daily forecasting
exercises. Please bring a laptop or tablet for the ‘live’ exercises.
A mountain weather forecasting workbook and other supplemental materials will be included for each student
in this course.
PRE-REQUISITES
Students should have a basic understanding of the weather and weather terminology, and have experience
navigating the Internet to view various weather maps and products. A technical science background is not
required; however, some pre-course preparation will prove helpful in understanding some of the concepts
presented. A pre-course reading list to include ‘The USA Today Weather Book’, by Jack Williams and ‘Reading
Weather ‘ by Jim Woodmencey are recommended but not required. Familiarity with navigating the Alaska
Weather Pages on www.mountainweather.com is encouraged.
