April 30 Kenneth P. Garnett Gazette, April 2017 Volume 17, Issue 4 April Sunshine Birds singing…sunshine…flowers blooming…green grass…rain drops…blue skies! Spring is here! I for one am ready for all that. One of my favorite things to do every spring is to go to the garden center and pick out flowers to plant. I usually try to plan a day that I can go by myself, which my husband really appreciates, because I take way too long deciding which ones to purchase. There are just so many to choose from! It is a bit early but the “spring tease” in February really put me in the mood for gardening and I can’t wait to get some bright colors on our campus! Another spring activity at Garnett Place is our annual Easter Egg Hunt. Mark your calendars and dig out those baskets. Plan arriving at 10:00 am so you can get your Easter picture taken with our photographer (Bethany McNeill Photography and Design). Garnett Place will provide one printed 5 x 7 for each family. To be a part of this opportunity you must register in advance with Kaelee Freeman (our Community Relations Coordinator—she can be reached at [email protected] or 319-533-5050). Then be ready for the Easter Egg Hunt, as we plan to begin the count down at 10:30 am sharp! Have a fantastic April and go outside and get some sunshine! Kim Emrich, Manager 202 35th St. Dr. S.E. Cedar Rapids, IA 319.362.3630 www.garnettplace.net Welcome Josh! Dare To Dream Meet our new Maintenance Coordinator! This special program allows us to make our resident’s dreams come true Josh joined the Garnett Place family at the beginning of March! Josh has worked in senior living communities for many years in different departments, making him a great asset to our team. Josh is from Lee Summit, MO and moved to Cedar Rapids with his family at the age of 8. Josh has a great passion for race cars, motorcycle's, classic cars, and auto body work. Josh has 2 children; Kegan, who is 6, and Alivia, who is 3! Josh states his grandfather taught him the meaning of life and values. If you have any maintenance concerns, suggestions, or questions for Josh, you may contact him at 319-362-3630. Join us for a special meet and greet in Josh’s honor. April 19th at 2:00 pm Welcome to Garnett Place Josh! I remember fondly one day walking into Margery’s apartment. She gave me the grand tour of her personal gallery within her room. Upon talking with Margery I learned she was an avid painter, and her daughter had even more of her pieces. Margery only wished she could continue to paint. In brainstorming how we could help Margery continue her art career, we teamed up with the Cedar Rapids Public Library to display Margery’s work in an official gallery! A special thank you to her daughter Deb for helping us make this dream happen. Margery told us that she used to work at Vera’s Craft Shop in Missouri. They were offering painting classes and she was told anyone could learn to paint. She said “are you kidding?!”. She started lessons, and has been loving it ever since. Margery began painting at the age of 40 and has enjoyed this hobby for 50 years. She especially enjoys painting buildings and landscapes. Her favorite painting is a scene of Herman, MO. Where she and her husband used to live. She started with oils, progressed to water colors and then tried her hand at acrylics. I love when all the new baby animals come out, the grass gets green and the flowers bloom. I have a little spring chicken, my son JT is going to be 8 this month! I remember so clearly when he was just a tiny baby. It is hard to believe how fast time goes by. April also makes my 2 ½ year anniversary here at Garnett. I have met and loved so many people in such a short time. I truly thank everyone that has been here, past and present, for gracing me with your presence and letting me get to know each and every one of you. I’m excited to start another season. Massage Therapy How many of you participate in massage therapy during our movie and popcorn activity each month? I hope all of you do! Massage Therapy has proven benefits. I even get a massage once a month. After I graduated college, I thought why not, I have a little extra money each month. Sometimes it can be hard. I would rather use that money to hang with friends or buy a new outfit, but massage therapy has done wonders for me! I have always struggled with neck pain due to the weird positions I read in. My chiropractor always told me to not read in weird positions. Now, I don’t have that problem with adding massage therapy to my self-care each month. It also helps with my stress levels. Life can be hard, but it’s an amazing ride if you take care of yourself. Tara Malcolm, Assistant Manager Beating Stress I am very happy to see so many of you are taking advantage of the fitness program that happens three times a week here at Garnett Place. Sitting around in your apartments can build stress into your thoughts. You start to worry about things that don’t have any bearings or real meaning. Getting out and just being social is a very helpful endeavor, not to mention moving your body parts during exercise to keep limber and exchange oxygen to your organs. You are all doing a great job, keep it up and encourage your friends to come and join you. Lee Thoma, RN, Health Care Coordinator Culinary Updates Happy April. Hopefully April showers will bring beautiful May flowers this year. It’s that time of the year again for the new Spring/Summer menu. So that will be starting soon. Please don’t be afraid to let me know your thoughts on it. There are always a few recipes we don’t enjoy, so I’ll make the appropriate changes based on your feedback. I don’t know what to change if you don’t tell me. It’ll be nice to see a fresh new menu and recipes. We’re seeing fresh fruit come back into season, and I know we all have been looking forward to that. I know many have been asking when it’ll be the season to get the fresh fruit. Good Bye Winter it’s time for Spring! Merissa Sweeney, Culinary Coordinator Join us Tuesday, April 18th at 10 a.m. to learn about the benefits massage therapy can do for you! Ann, our therapist that comes each month, will be here to share about Massage Therapy. I hope to see you ALL there! Kaelee Freeman, Community Relations Coordinator A is for Animals, Adventures, and April! Cabin fever is subsiding. The weather is turning nice as we enter spring. Animals start appearing around Garnett Place. Wait, What?! That’s right, April programming is going to consist of a lot of furry (and some not furry) creatures. Buck the Mini Horse is going to be returning for a visit on April 4th, so make sure you see him. Arrive early if you want to watch him arrive in Lindsey’s small compact car and ride the elevator down to meet all of us. Oliver (the dog) is visiting for his usual round of pet therapy on April 5th. Followed by Indian Creek Nature Center, on April 11th, is coming to present a reptiles program for us. Their naturalist will bring a turtle, snake, and salamander for us to meet and learn about. Next is the adventure portion. Our annual Easter Egg Hunt is coming up, so get ready to ask yourself which came first “The bunny or the egg” (hee hee, I think that’s such a funny YOLK—get it, joke… yolk… ) Then we’re going to watch Elayne dance at her studio on the 25th. If you don’t know much about her, Elayne is a fabulous dancer who has traveled the nation to show off her skills. We’re lucky to have her here at Garnett, and luckier to have the opportunity to see her show! If you’re not adventured out yet, we’re going to the New Bo Market’s Senior Fair on the 21st. There will be all sorts of vendors who cater to Older Adults. I’m looking forward to all of our April Activities. It’s going to be, “egg-cellent” (get it, excellent. I’m on a roll this month).
