¡Hola! Welcome to the Spanish class! Dear families, I hope you are all staying healthy. Last weeks report cards went home and I want to add a comment about grading in Spanish class. As you might have notice it has changed and it goes like this: For K-2 there are 2 skill areas plus participation. For grades 3-5 there are three skill areas plus participation. We replaced "effort" because participation is something we can see and measure. Grades K-2 *Interpretive Skills: Demonstrates understanding of oral or written language at novice level. *Interpersonal Communication: Communicates spontaneously at novice level using unit vocabulary. *Participation Grades 3-5 *Interpretive Skills: Demonstrates understanding of oral or written language at novice level. *Interpersonal Communication: Communicates spontaneously at novice level using unit vocabulary. *Presentational Communication: Presents orally or in writing with preparation at novice level using unit vocabulary. *Participation— If you have any questions regarding grading don’t hesitate to get in touch with me. These are the skills we have been working on: Kindergarten: The children learned how about mascotas (pets): whether they have none, one or more, which one and how it is. 1st grade: The students learned about parts of the body. The also learned how to say “me duele” (It hurts…) and now, we are learning about clothing. 2nd grade: The students learned how to describe themselves and others: color or their hair, eyes and other characteristics. They described members of their families. Then they learned to speak about who they live with, where and about parts of a home (rooms, furniture, etc) 3rd grade: The students did a wonderful job learning about El Sistema Solar. We learned about each single planet by reading the information in Spanish. Wow! Now they are planning to establish a colony on Mars, ask them about it! 4th grade: We continued our travel unit; the students used their iPads to “pack” for an imaginary trip to a Spanish speaking country. Now we are reviewing numbers and learning how to ask how much something costs. 5th grade: Students wrote great stories based on a story we acted out in class. Ask them to show it to you on their iPads! They are reviewing numbers and prices to “travel” to their country. 3rd, 4th and 5th graders have the Rosetta Stone app in their devices. I gave all 5th grade classes information about how to log in and I asked them to familiarize themselves with it during the winter break. There will be more communication about how this will be used in the FLES program, but I want to let all the families know that it will NOT substitute in any way the classroom teaching. 4th and 3th graders will learn about it when we come back from the break and there will be a note to families with more specific information in January. I hope you all have a restful break, don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. The 2015 Bee for Grades 2 through 5 will be held on Tuesday, January 27th at 6:30 p.m. in the Beye School auditorium. Each grade will compete separately as its own grade group. All students will receive a prize for participating in this friendly competition. Word lists and rules are attached to this form. Please take time to study this word list. The words will be taken right from the attached list, until we exhaust that list. After that point, we will move to an unpublished challenge list (and for all of you who have been to spelling bees in the past, you know that your third grader might need to know how to spell the word “croissant” and second graders should know the word “sunbonnet”). The details: Submit your completed registration form by Tuesday, January 20 to your homeroom teacher (Walk-ins are welcome, too) Practice the published word list. Join us for an informal practice session immediately afterschool on Tuesday, January 27th (from approximately 3:10 until 3:45). At 6:30 on the night of the Bee, the 2nd graders take the stage. Each grade level follows in order. Spelling. Bee There. 1.27.15 BEYE SCHOOL SPELLING BEE RULES 1. Every student registering for the Spelling Bee will receive a word list from which to study. 2. Word lists will be taken directly from this word list during competition. In the event of a tie, words will be taken from an unpublished ‘tie breaker’ list. 3. If at any time three consecutive rounds are completed while using the published word list without any elimination, words from the unpublished list may be used. When the unpublished word lists are used, alternate spelling will be accepted if found in the dictionary used by the Judges. 4. Students are asked not to bring the word list to the competition. 5. The Spelling Bee will consist of only one round. Spellers are asked to sit down after misspelling a word. The round will continue until only 2 spellers are left standing. 6. The Bee will be conducted in rounds by grade. Students will only be competing against others from the same grade. 7. At the end of the Bee, there will be a champion, a 2nd place and 3rd place finisher for each grade. 8. During competition, each student will be given a word to spell by the Pronouncer. The student is expected to say the word, spell the word, and say the word again. The student will not be disqualified if they do not pronounce the word before or after spelling it. 9. If the student misspells the word, they are out of the competition, except when there are two spellers remaining. (See Rule 17). The next word on the Pronouncer’s list is given to the next speller. 10. The speller may ask the Pronouncer to repeat the word, define it, and/or use it in a sentence. 11. If a word has a homonym, the Pronouncer will indicate which word is to be spelled. 12. Having started to spell a word, a speller may stop and start over, retracing the spelling from the beginning, but in retracing there can be no change of letters or their sequence from those first pronounced. If letters or their sequences are changed in the respelling, the speller is eliminated. 13. The Judges may disqualify any speller who ignores a request to start spelling. 14. The role of the Pronouncer is to correctly pronounce the word and give a definition and/or sentence at the speller’s request. 15. A maximum of 30 seconds will be allowed to pronounce the word and complete the spelling of the word. 16. The role of the Judge is to determine whether the student has spelled the word correctly. The Judge’s decision shall be final on all questions. 17. When there are two spellers remaining, the elimination process changes. When one speller misspells a word, the other speller is given the same word to spell. If the second speller spells that word correctly, plus the next word on the Pronouncer’s list, then that speller is declared the champion. If both spellers misspell the same word, the Bee continues with the speller who first misspelled the word being given a new word to spell. 18. When there are two spellers remaining and five consecutive rounds are completed without a winner, the judges may declare a tie. 19.
