Missionary Sisters of Service:
In 2014, the Missionary Sisters of Service celebrate 70 years since their order was founded in Tasmania by Fr John Wallis.
Also the sisters are celebrating 50 years ministering in the Toowoomba Diocese. The sisters have ventured into the remote areas of South
West Queensland over the past 50 years. This long association with the Toowoomba Diocese continues today with a number of the sisters
residing in Toowoomba.
In May 1964, five Sisters arrived in Toowoomba at the invitation of Bishop Brennan. They came initially to serve the rural
parishes by way of home visits and providing faith education for adults and children. Their travels took them to scattered and isolated
communities. They stayed with families or at local churches. At that time they were commonly known as the Rosary House Sisters.
The Sisters invite parishioners to come along and celebrate the Golden Jubilee on Sunday 27th April. At the same time, they
will be celebrating the 70th anniversary of the foundation of their Congregation.
This will be at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Toowoomba on Sunday 27th April, commencing with Mass at 11.30am. This will
be followed by a light luncheon. Those attending will need to book prior to 17th April.

Hello everyone,
The staff and I attended professional development workshop with Michael Grose at the beginning of the year. Michael’s
focus has always surrounded parents and their involvement with their child’s school. Here are a few more comments from
Michael that may be of some interest to you.
Parent involvement is the secret ingredient to children’s school success. Positive parent participation demonstrates to
children that you value learning as well as holding their school in high regard. Have you ever heard a parent run the
school or its staff down? Makes you wonder why they continue to send their child to the school? Remember - if you find yourself in a
conversation with someone who has nothing good to say, about the school, you are well within your rights to advise them to see the
classroom teacher or Principal immediately. Any concerns raised will be heard and answered immediately.
Michael Grose says that parents need to become advocates for their child’s school and openly promote its positive features. Attend
school activities and events. Consult with your child’s teacher about practical ways that you can assist both at home and at school.
These are just a few ways to contribute and support the school that supports your child.
The Welcome BBQ and Disco is set for Friday the 21st Feb. The school asks that all members of the Board and P&F executive avail
themselves to be introduced on the night to the wider community. This will take a few moments of your time. The rest of the night will
focus on giving everyone the opportunity to get to know each other. Take up this challenge.
We congratulate Mr Brett Rangiira for accepting the role of Board President for 2014. We also acknowledge these members: Jan
Neale, Vicky Nauschutz, Kim Hess, Brendan O’Reilly, Paul Wiedman &Tom Bradbury. These parents & staff assist and provide advice
for Fr Hal and myself in policy development and future direction of the school. This is a position of service to the entire community.
Thank you for your considerable commitment to the school.
Paul
Next Week is ‘Family Week’ please enjoy
spending time as a family!
APRE News - What is the RTC?
The Responsible Thinking Classroom (RTC) was designed to give students the
opportunity to reflect on their own choices of behaviour, in a quiet, safe and supportive
environment. The students take “time out” of their busy day at school to reflect on the
choices they have made and the choices they could make if they were faced with a
similar situation in the future. Children are supervised and supported by a qualified
teacher in the RTC. If a child breaks a school rule in the playground or is repeatedly spoken to by a teacher for breaking class rules,
then they will spend time in the RTC.
Here at St Anthony’s we strive to keep parents well informed. It is for this reason why we send you a text message to inform your child
has spent time in the RTC. We will also send all correspondence home for you to read, sign and return to school. Please read the form
carefully and talk to your child about it. If you have any concerns, you need to speak to the teacher who gave your child the RTC slip.
Every student has the right to be safe and learn in environment conducive to learning. In order to help create this environment, we
must have rules and we must enforce them. We acknowledge that is important for children to play and socialise with each other.
Therefore, the RTC is only open for one play break during the day. This ensures so all students have the opportunity to play with their
friends at least once during the day.

Music
I have started to receive notes from children who are interested in performing in a solo section at the
Eisteddfod this year. This can be a great opportunity for children who are willing to put in the time to
rehearse for this event. Entries are due by the end of February and Entry Fees are usually around $5.00.
Solo Eisteddfod preparation is something that should happen at home, and parents have the responsibility of transporting children to
and from the performances. I am happy to help co-ordinate the entry forms, to let the children know when they’ll be performing, and to
provide support at school.
For those children who wish to sing, I can help with the selection of songs and am willing to accompany the children on the day of their
performance. I am usually able to make a practice CD for the children to rehearse with at home. This year we are lucky enough to have
Mrs Sandra Neale offering her expertise for those children who would like assistance in the area of Speech and Drama. Mrs Neale is
an extremely talented and highly qualified speech teacher. If your child wishes to enter any of the speech sections this year I would
encourage you to contact Mrs Neale for further information. I know her contact details have been in the newsletter recently.
CHOIRS
St Anthony’s will enter two choirs in the Toowoomba Eisteddfod this year: the Primary School Choir A Grade and (for the first time) a
Primary Boys’ Choir. In the past our choirs tended to be 50% male and female, but over the past few years the boys have drifted away
a little. I’d really like to change that this year. Please en-courage your children – and especially your boys – to take part in choir. These
choirs are open to any child in Years 4 to 7 who is willing to give up one lunch hour a week to practise. We will combine the choirs for
rehearsal times until closer to the date. 2014 is also a SING OUT year! Anyone who has ever attended SING OUT will tell you what a
wonderful opportunity it is.
Children’s Choir
We will be leading the singing at the 8.30 mass on Sunday the 2nd of March. Our first get together for children’s choir will be this
Friday during 2nd Break. This choir is aimed at our younger children, who work to learn the hymns sung
at St Anthony’s Parish masses and then share their lovely voices with that community. We always have
older children to support them so it isn’t a stressful experience for anyone. Looking forward to seeing
some lovely new faces and hearing some beautiful new voices!

Children’s Liturgy
Here at St Anthony’s, we offer a Children’s Liturgy Program for children from 3 years to those children preparing for the Sacraments.
The program is offered on Sunday mornings during our 8.30am Mass.
The children are called just as Mass begins and are taken by the Leader and helper to our Community Centre. They are involved with
the scripture readings of the day, but from the Children’s Bible, at a level that they can understand. They will often colour a picture that
connects with the readings or create a craft item that also relates.
The Leaders and helpers are experienced parents, some may also be teachers, who like to involve the children in the Gospel stories.
Leaders who do not have children attending sessions all have Blue Cards to adhere to the Child Safety Laws. Teachers hold an
Exemption Card.
Parents are welcome to stay with their children for the sessions, if you feel that your child may not settle on their own.
Parents are also encouraged to become involved in the sessions.
The Children’s Liturgy sessions are always in school term time of 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Sundays of the month.
Please feel free to join us on a Sunday as we celebrate God’s word as St Anthony’s Community. For more information please contact
our Parish Office when you drop off or pick up your child from School or phone us on 4636 1737.
