Two households vie in fair DCS
O
n 16 May 2013 actors from
the Arts and Culture Department of the University
of Johannesburg performed Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to our Grade 9
and Grade 10 learners. Modern
costumes and actions, combined with
old English vocabulary made this show
both relevant to the lives of today’s
teenagers, whilst still retaining the
magic of the original script.
"Romeo and Juliet was fantastic and truly
captured the feel of Shakespearean Italy.
All the actors had various characters to
portray and each one of them played his
instrument to alert the king. They
"Live theatre gives
the learners an
opportunity to
engage emotionally
with the text in an
inspiring way."
“A simple yet enjoyable play which gave
me a visual interpretation of the famous
Shakespearean play, Romeo and Juliet.
The actors were of high quality and the
fact that it was modernized, made it applicable to our lives”.

embodied Shakespeare’s vision of all
these different personalities to absolute
perfection. For a theatre enthusiast
like myself, this performance was
immaculately executed”

The cold weather could not dampen
the spirit and enthusiasm displayed by
our young superstars at the Foundation Phase Inter-Catholic Netball
and Soccer Festival at Sacred Heart
College. The results were not important as soccer and netball were the
big winners on the day. Thank you to
all the parents for your support.
The Grade 4 learners enjoyed a Natural
Science and Technology lesson making
seed trays and displaying good tool handling and team work, whilst the Grade 6
Information Technology learners embraced
the Edmodo Interactive Progamme with
much enthusiasm, interacting both with
Mr Ukpong and their peers in a controlled
environment.

Entrepreneur and radio personality, Katlego
Mabusela, joined us as a guest speaker at assembly
this week. He motivated us to be resilient and never
give up. We were told to remember that life won’t
be easy but the CAN of survival can help us through
difficult situations. The contents of this CAN include: condition, action, and never giving up.

The full-term boarders proudly carried our school
banner to church for Catholic School Sunday.
We were very honoured to represent our school at
St Anne’s Church and have various people ask for
brochures and information about the school. It
reminded us of the strong Catholic ethos on which
our school is based.

FROM THE HEADMASTER'S DESK
Follow moral compass
Part of our Term 2 theme is a call to follow our moral compass, to question what it is
that I must say and do to be true to myself, and to use my gifts and beliefs to set the
world on fire. What is missing in much of the South African education system is the
opportunity for children to discover exactly what their moral compass is. In a confusing and materialistic world where adults seem to value things more than thoughts,
money more than happiness, it is even more important for our children to build within
themselves an empathy and understanding, that will make them leaders of humanity in later life. This is the teaching of our Catholic school, and in celebrating Catholic
Schools' Sunday we are reminded that Dominican teaches children to create a better
future, free from the negative issues common where values are not openly taught.
