UNIT 7 STANDARDS/ASSESSED CRITERIA
STANDARDS
Kansas History Benchmark 2: The student understands individuals, groups, ideas, events, and developments during Kansas
territory and the Civil War (1854-1865).
1. (A) describes the concept of popular sovereignty under the Kansas- Nebraska Act and its impact on developing a
state constitution.
2.▲ (K) describes how the dispute over slavery shaped life in Kansas Territory (e.g., border ruffians, bushwhackers,
jayhawkers, the Underground Railroad, free-staters, abolitionists).
3. (A) analyzes the importance of “Bleeding Kansas” to the rest of the United States in the years leading up to the
Civil War (e.g., national media attention, caning of Senator Charles Sumner, Emigrant Aid Societies, Beecher Bible
and Rifle Colony, poems of John Greenleaf Whittier, John Brown).
4. (K) describes the role of important individuals during the territorial period (e.g., Charles Robinson, James Lane,
John Brown, Clarina Nichols, Samuel Jones, David Atchison, and Andrew H. Reeder).
5. (A) analyzes the Wyandotte Constitution with respect to the civil rights of women and African Americans.
Assessed Criteria
□ 1. Students will understand the causes and results of the Wakarusa War.
□ 2. Students will understand who Charles Robinson is and the leadership role he played in territorial Kansas.
□ 3. Students will understand why and how a separate government was established by the anti-slavery party and
the impact this had on Kansas.
□ 4. Students will understand how the Topeka convention and constitution led the motivated the pro-slavery party
to destroy the anti-slavery party.
□ 5. Students will understand the causes, the actions by both parties, and the results of the sacking of Lawrence.
□ 6. Students will understand John Brown, his reaction Pottawatomie Creek Massacre) to the sacking of
Lawrence, his continuous fight against the pro-slavery party, and his eventual hanging for treason.
□ 7. Students will understand how the free-staters moved on after the arrest of their leaders (capture of Ft. Titus,
capturing of pro-slavery men and cannon, etc).
□ 8. Students will understand the caning of Senator Charles Sumner by Preston Brooks on the senate floor.
□ 9. Students will understand the Marais Des Cygnes Massacre.
□ 10. Students will understand Sheriff Samuel Jones and his impact on territorial Kansas.
□ 11. Students will understand the impact of illegal voting and it affects on territorial Kansas.
□ 12. Students will understand why the size of the Kansas Territory was reduced to its present boundaries.
□ 13. Students will understand what political party was established in the 1850’s.
□ 14. Students will understand the influence and impact President Franklin Pierce had on Territorial Kansas.
□ 15. Students will understand the 4 constitutions, how they’re similar and different, and which one became our
constitution.
□16. Students will be able to map the location of the Wakarusa River, Marais Des Cygnes River, and Lecompton. Locations
from previous tests will also be able to be mapped.
