Dies Domini: The Day of the Lord
Sunday has been called the “Lord’s Day” from Apostolic times (St. Justin
Martyr). It is this day of the week above all others that is most closely associated
with the Lord because Christ’s Resurrection took place on a Sunday. “It is Easter
which returns week by week, celebrating Christ’s victory over sin and death, the
fulfillment in him of the first creation and the dawn of the new creation (Dies
Office/Oficina
Domini, 1)”.
Sunday invites us to joy, like the joy the two disciples on the road to Emmaus felt
302 South B Street
as the Lord explained the Scriptures to them: they felt their hearts “burn within

them” as he walked on the road with them and revealed himself in the breaking of
Monday/Lunes
the bread.
9:00 a.m. -3:30p.m.
By commemorating the day of Christ’s Resurrection, not only once a year, but
Tuesday-Friday/Martes-Viernes
every Sunday, the Church points out to the world that Christ’s Resurrection is “the
9:00 a.m. - 4:00p.m.
true fulcrum of history, to which the mystery of the world’s origin and its final

destiny leads”.
The development of the “weekend”, as a regular part of ordinary life, has had
www.sacredheartac.com
many positive effects on society, giving men and women more leisure time and
opportunities to travel and to gather together. The weekend responds to our human
School/Escuela
need for rest and also for celebration. Unfortunately, Sunday loses its fundamental
312 South B Street
meaning when it becomes merely part of the “weekend”, another day.
620-442-6550
We have to make a distinction between the celebration of Sunday, and keeping

the Lord’s Day holy, and the “weekend”, understood as a time of simple rest and
relaxation. This requires spiritual maturity and a deep desire to seek the Lord. This
Easter, as we renew our baptismal commitments to Our Lord, pray for a renewed commitment to the “Lord’s Day”.
