Andrew Carnegie Elementary School 1414 East 61st Place • Chicago, Illinois 60637 Telephone 773/5350530 Fax 773/5350525 Docilla Pollard Juanita Stem Principal Assistant Principal February 11, 2016 Dear Parents/Guardians, On Tuesday, February 9th, CPS met with principals to discuss the upcoming budget cuts and the impact on specific schools. Andrew Carnegie School was asked to cut $128,236.00 from our total 201516 budget. As a result of these cuts, a vacant teaching position and Winter/Spring Sports Programs have been closed. We will end the After School Program on Thursday, February 11th. Effective, Tuesday, February 16th, all students will be promptly dismissed at 3:45 p.m. However, we will adjust the After School All Star Program (grant funding source) to serve our benchmark grades of 3, 6, and 8, with the current teachers and/or MSU Student Interns in place. This program will continue to run on MondayThursday. As well as adjust the Music Program; the Primary Choir will meet on Mondays and the Upper Grade Choir will meet on Wednesdays. These programs will run through April 7, 2016. The Art Should and Winning Words Programs will continue to run on Wednesdays through May 2016. The WITS tutoring offsite Program will continue to run on Thursdays through May 26, 2016. All students in these programs will be dismissed at 5:00 p.m. The above budget adjustments will prevent teacher and staff layoffs; ensure no disruption to our academic programs and allow class sizes to remain the same through the end of the school year. I firmly believe that every position at Carnegie plays a critical role in ensuring our students success. I also believe this is the best course of action for the students, families, teachers, and staff of Carnegie. I want to conclude by thanking the LSC and Carnegie staff members for their unwavering support, hard work, commitment, dedication, and stellar instruction during these tiring times. This is a challenge for everyone, but I cannot imagine a better school or staff to overcome these challenges here at Carnegie. Sincerely, Mrs. D. Pollard, Principal
