Richard Wright Lindsey Nicholson and Anya Griffin • • • • • • • • • • • • • Richard Wright was born September 4 1908, in Mississippi. He was a descendent of slaves. His childhood experiences of racial discrimination contributed to his writing. He was educated until 9th grade. Wright wrote his first story at 16 years old. “The Voodoo Of Hell’s Half Acre” He moved to Chicago by himself, at the young age of 19. Extreme poverty during The Great Depression led him to join the communist party in 1932. He won a Spingarn Metal, which was unusual for an African American. Wright was not religious. Wright’s family was deeply religious, and did not approve of his writings. He wrote about controversial topics, such as race. He gained fame for “Native Son” in 1940. He died in Paris, France at the age of 52. The cause of death was a heart attack.
