Adding a Language The computer can be adusted to function in more than one language. Click on Start and choose Control Panel. Click on View by: and choose Category. Click on Clock, Language, and Region. Click on Region and Language. Click on the Keyboards and Languages tab. In the Keyboards and other input languages section, click on Change keyboards… In the Installed services section, click on Add. Scroll through the list and find the desired language. Click on the plus in front of the language. Click on the plus in front of Keyboard. Click to select US or US keyboard. Click OK. Click OK. Click OK. Close the Control Panel window. Selecting the Language With more than one language available, a choice can be made relative to which language the keyboard is to use. A floating Language bar may be on the screen or the language choice may appear on the Taskbar. Language Bar When the Language bar is available, it floats on the screen. To drag the Language bar to a different location on the screen, click on the button on the left side and drag it to the desired location. To change the keyboard language, click on the name of the current language and choose the desired language. To move the Language bar to the Taskbar, click on Minimize. To display the Language bar again, click on the language button on the Taskbar and choose Show the Language bar. Taskbar When the Language bar is minimized, a language button is displayed on the right side of the Taskbar. To change the keyboard language, click on the language button and choose the desired language. Page 1 Technology Integration Center Davis School District, Farmington, Utah 84025 Revised 1/21/2015 Typing Characters in Other Languages Once additional languages have been added to the keyboard, it is possible to type the characters of that language even though they do not appear on the English keyboard. Spanish Characters Click on the Language Bar and change the keyboard to Spanish. To type an accented vowel, press Ctrl + ‘ and then the vowel. To type ñ, hold down the Ctrl and the Shift keys while pressing ~ and then press the n. To type capital letters, be sure to hold down the Shift key when pressing the desired letter key. French Characters Click on the Language Bar and change the keyboard to French. Note: The AltGr key is located to the right of the spacebar. To type accent grave (à, è, etc.), type ` (to the left of the 1) and then the vowel. To type aigu (é), hold down the AltGr key and press the e. To type cèdille hold down the AltGr key and press the c. To type circinflexe (ê), hold down the Alt and the Shift keys while pressing the ^ and then press the desired vowel. To type tréma (ö), hold hold down the Alt and the Shift keys while pressing the “ and then press the desired vowel. Translating a Document or Text Word can translate a document into a different language. When a document has been translated, it should be reviewed by someone who speaks the language for possible errors in the translation. Choosing the Language Open the document in Microsoft Word. On the Ribbon, click on the Review tab. In the Language group, click on Translate and choose Choose Translation Language…. Click on the Translate to: down arrow and choose the desired language. In the Choose document translation languages section, check to see that the information is correct. Click OK. Page 2 Technology Integration Center Davis School District, Farmington, Utah 84025 Revised 1/21/2015 Translating the Document Have the document that is to be translate open in Microsoft Word. Click in the document. The translation is done through the Microsoft Translator service. The text is sent there and translated. On the Ribbon, click on the Review tab. In the Language group, click on Translate and choose Translate Document [English (United States) to “language chosen”. The Translate Whole Document window provides information on what is happening. Click on Send. Copy the translated text from the web page and paste it to a new blank document. If only a portion of the document is needed, copy that portion and paste it into the desired location. Holding the mouse over a portion of the translation displays the original text. Translating Selected Text A word or sentence can be easily translated into another language. Click in the document and select the word or sentence to be translated. The translation is done through the Microsoft Translator service in the Research pane. On the Ribbon, click on the Review tab. In the Language group, click on Translate and choose Translate Selected Text. The Research pane appears on the side. The From box indicates which language the text is in originally. The To box indicates the language into which the text is to be translated. If the language chosen in the To box is not correct, click on the down arrow and choose the desired language. If the language in the To box is changed, the text is immediately translated into the chosen language. To see the languages available, click on Translation options…. To insert the translated text: o Click in the document where the text is to be inserted. o In the Research pane, click on Insert. To copy the translated text: o In the Research pane, click on the Insert down arrow and choose Copy. o Click in the document where the text is to be inserted. o Click on Paste or use Ctrl V. o Note: The advantage of using Copy is that the text can be pasted in many locations.
