In 2009, the national estate of
Marly was made part of the
Établissement public de Versailles.
Located 7 km to the north−west
of Versailles, this estate was
the other major achievement of
Louis XIV. Designed by Jules
Hardouin-Mansart from 1679,
it consisted of different pavilions
set around a central pavilion
with an north−south layout,
surrounded by fountains and pools,
a cascade and groves with statues.
Destroyed at the end of the
18th century, this estate is now
the subject of a study on how
to develop it and ultimately restore
its past splendour, in partnership
with the local authorities concerned.

Laid out by André Le Nôtre from 1661 on,
the gardens of Versailles with their parterres,
groves, statues, fountains and pools, form
the model par excellence of the formal
“French garden”. They were modified and
completed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart (the
fountains of Latona and the Seasons; the
groves of the Domes, the Colonnade, the
Obelisk, etc.). The ancient figure of Apollo,
the Sun God, is present all over the estate.
After the formally laid out gardens of the
Petit Parc, you come to the Grand Parc and
its Canal, an ideal setting for strolls, boat
outings, bicycle rides and long rambles.
Built as an Italianate palace with Carrara Palaces of Trianon and

Thanks to the great richness and diversity
of the visits, plan your day to discover the
splendours of Versailles. Starting in the
Royal Courtyard, make your own way
around the different parts of the Palace
and then cross through the gardens and
groves to visit the two palaces of Trianon
and Marie-Antoinette's Estate.
In 1661, Louis XIV undertook the transformation and enlargement of the original
château of Louis XIII, entrusting the work
to two architects, Louis Le Vau and then
Jules Hardouin-Mansart. The work continued up to his death in 1715. The Palace
was embellished in the 18th century ; new
apartments are arranged in the reigns of
Louis XV and Louis XVI. On 6 October 1789,
the monarchy left Versailles after the first
days of the French Revolution. In 1837,
king Louis-Philippe officially opened in the
Palace his Museum dedicated to “All the
glories of France”.

The Petit Trianon and its park are linked irrevocably to the memory of Marie-Antoinette
who was the only queen to have imposed
her personal taste on Versailles. Given to
her in 1774 by Louis XVI, the queen could
find in this estate a haven of tranquillity and
intimacy, notably in the Hamlet built for
her by Richard Mique in 1787. The restoration of the railings by Napoleon has restored
to this estate its full coherence. Perfectly
preserved until now, it expresses marvellously the refinement and the fantasy of the art
of living and thinking in the 18th century.
