MAKE YOUR DREAM HOME A REALITY
Have you been dreaming about a home with a bigger kitchen, a deck or more bedrooms? Your dream
can become a reality with a home equity or mortgage loan from Columbus Metro.
Give your existing home a makeover
If your current home is just an updated kitchen or new deck away from being your dream home, a
home equity loan or line of credit may be just what you need. A home equity loan can provide a
lump sum for one major project, while a line of credit may be a better choice if you have several
projects in the works. Either way, you’ll benefit from a low rate and a potential tax deduction.*
For more information on home equity loans, stop in any of our offices, call one of our lending
professionals at 614.239.0210 or 800.986.3876 or visit www.columbusmetro.org today.

On the other hand, a growing family or newly empty nest may mean that having your dream home
requires a move. If that’s the case, you’ll need a mortgage loan. You may look at a lot of homes to
find the right one, but you’re sure to find the right mortgage at Columbus Metro.
We offer a variety of loan options, including FHA and VA loans and first-time home buyer
programs. And you won’t have to sort through the options on your own – our experienced mortgage
specialist, Jenniffer McNamee, is here to help. You can reach Jenniffer at 614.239.0210 or

PIN-LESS DEBIT
Have you noticed something different when
you use your Debit MasterCard®? You make a
small purchase at a fast-food restaurant, grocery
store or other retailer. You swipe your debit
card, but you don’t enter your PIN or sign a
receipt.
This is PIN-less debit, a way of processing
a debit card transaction through the ATM
network without a PIN. More and more
merchants, including Target, WalMart, Kroger,
McDonald’s and Amazon, are taking advantage
of this payment method.

1. A 50¢ fee is assessed if the transaction is processed on an ATM network other than JEANIE.SM
2. ATM transactions aren’t covered by our Courtesy Pay service, so you may find that
transactions that were previously covered are now being declined.
Unfortunately, consumers don’t have any say in how transactions are routed – current law
leaves it up to the merchant. You can, however, avoid out-of-network ATM fees when you use

GIVE YOUR KIDS THE RIGHT FINANCIAL TOOLS
Teach Children to Save Day is April 29
Strong financial skills are as important to your child as good nutrition and study habits.
Fortunately, it’s easy to use everyday situations to build your child’s knowledge from
pre-K through college. Here’s how:
• Pre-K & Elementary School: Let your child see you handle money. Talk
about what you do at the credit union, at the ATM and at the checkout.
Explain where the money comes from and how it gets there. Talk about
the decisions you make while shopping, wants vs. needs, etc.
• Middle & High School: Talk about using credit responsibly, saving for
retirement and giving to charity as your child begins to manage the
money they receive as gifts, as allowance or for part-time work. Help
them set goals and encourage entrepreneurial endeavors.
• College & Beyond: Sit down with your young adult and talk about
paying for college loans, taking their first job, and the importance of longterm investments. Explain your expectations for their financial contributions if they
still live at home, and talk about what you’re willing to do to help them become truly independent.
Don’t forget that every child’s path to successful money management begins with an active savings account. Bring your child to any
of our branches to open their account. You can also take advantage of the resources available through the Metro Kids Club featuring
Kirby Kangaroo (for kids ages 12 & under), Claim Your Youth (ages 13 to 17) and through America Saves (www.AmericaSaves.org).
FINANCIAL TIPS FOR NEW GRADS
It’s exciting – and scary – to be a new college graduate. Finding a job in your field can be a
challenge. Money may be tight as you transition from student to taxpayer and start repaying your
student loans.
But don’t be discouraged. The job market is on the rebound and wages are increasing, so good
jobs are easier to find. Get off to the right start financially with these tips:
• Watch your pennies. Little expenses can add up fast. Cut down on eating out, movies and
other treats that you don’t need. Learning to cook can be a huge money-saver.
• Start saving. It’s important to have a rainy day fund. Do your best to set aside some money
on a regular basis, even $5 or $10 a week to start. The important thing is to get in the habit
of saving and then as your income increases, your savings should increase. Eventually you
should have three to six months’ worth of expenses saved for emergencies.
• Handle credit wisely. Don’t fall into the habit of using credit for purchases you really can’t
afford. It will cost you a bundle in the long run. If you use a credit card, pay off the balance
in full every month.
• Get help if you need it. When you’re ready to start saving automatically with every
paycheck or to apply for that first credit card or car loan, we’re here to help.
You’re off to a great start by having a college degree. With some solid habits in place, your
financial future is sure to be bright.
Don’t let a big home repair bill dampen your excitement for spring. Here are a few
preventative maintenance projects to take on now that it’s warming up:
• Clean and reinforce gutters. Snow and freezing rain can weaken gutters. Gutters
clogged with leaves and other debris will cause water to overflow, too. Routine
cleaning and a visual check of your gutters and downspouts can prevent water
damage, roof damage, soil erosion and foundation leaks.
• Inspect HVAC units. Get outside and inspect the area around your outdoor
HVAC unit/fan. Make sure that there are no overgrown bushes or trees or other
materials that could interfere with airflow.
• Clean or replace dryer ducts. Over time, lint accumulates inside your dryer ducts.
That hampers airflow, meaning your dryer has to work longer and harder to dry
the same load of laundry. That lint can also become a fire hazard. And check the
outside of the vent to make sure it’s clear – birds and other animals may climb in
there during the winter to get warm.
Taking a few hours to inspect the exterior of your home and make any necessary repairs
can add up to big savings down the road.

NEW PHONE SYSTEM, WEBSITE COMING IN 2016
We have two big projects in the works for 2016:
a new phone system and a new website.
The new phone system will replace the one we installed back in
2007 with the latest technology and allow us to provide better
service to members who call for assistance. We expect to have the
new system installed in mid to late April. We will do our best to
minimize the inconvenience this may cause, but there may be
minor disruptions that occur during installation.
We’ll also launch a new website sometime this summer. Our
current site dates back to 2001 and is long overdue for an
update. Planning for the new site is in the very early stages,
but it will be optimized for mobile devices and feature a
more intuitive design, search function and much more.
Watch for more on our new website in the summer issue
of Credit Views.
