DEATH VALLEY
National Park
Thur, Jan 26th, thru Sun, Jan 29th, 2017
Hottest, Driest,
Lowest...
In this below-sea-level
basin, steady drought and
record summer heat make
Death Valley a land of
extremes. Yet, each
extreme has a striking
contrast. Towering peaks
are frosted with winter
snow. Rare rainstorms
bring vast fields of
wildflowers. Lush oases
harbor tiny fish and refuge
for wildlife and humans.
Despite its morbid name,
a great diversity of life
survives in Death Valley.
Join Jeff and a group of adventurous DA explorers for a return visit to one of the most unique destinations on our planet!
Adventure travelers come from literally around the world to experience this locale. You can too, and its not a two day flight to reach it! It’s a
leisurely half day drive over to the California/Nevada border. Come experience DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK with DA!
Death Valley is full of desert vistas that will leave you awestruck. Many of them you can reach from short hikes from your car, or for
those who want more, from many mile long hiking trails. You get to see rugged, isolated, raw nature at its best in this park!
Once you arrive in Furnace Creek Village, this is where each vehicle can purchase a visitor’s permit and check out the very
informative park visitor’s center. Furnace Creek Village also offers two hotels (one a luxury desert oasis!), several restaurants, a gas station
and a great general store with food and touristy items to load up on.
Our campsite is located in Group Site 1 (previously called site H, but still the same great location as in our 2014 trip!) Conveniently
located in the Furnace Creek Campground. It is a simple walk over to the village. Our site is next to restrooms, and showers can be taken
nearby by purchasing a voucher at the Ranch at Furnace Creek hotel. A group dinner will be planned for Friday night with a to be determined
theme. DA will provide the main course and non-alcoholic beverages. Please bring an in- theme side dish or desert to share with your
friends. Breakfast Saturday morning will also be provided by DA. For those who would like to eat out a meal, we can plan a dinner at one of
our local venues on one of our other nights in the valley. Firewood can be purchased at the local market or plan on bringing a bundle or two.
You are free to participate in group plans for the day or to go out and explore the park on your own. Possible trips: A little north of our
campsite are impressive Mesquite Flat sand dunes that can provide an exciting opportunity at night to do a little hiking and star-gazing. This
is on the official list of “must do’s” in the park!; Badwater basin is the lowest elevation in the 282 ft below sea level and another easy drive
with a unique opportunity to walk out on the salt pan; Zabriskie overlook for a sunrise that is worth getting up early for; it’s a good half day
trip to the Devil’s racetrack to see the mysterious sliding rocks, but it is a unique experience!; Numerous other destinations exist.. Artist’s
Drive road, the West Side Road, Titus Canyon, Ubehebe Crater, Golden Canyon...and many others!
The costs for this trip: $35 per member,$45 per guest + Park fee per vehicle of $20. Furnace Creek Campground Group Site 1 is
a tent only site. Check in at 1pm, checkout 12pm. Please RSVP and pay online at desertadventures.org. Further information can be
obtained from Jeff Kita at (623 670-8909) (Death Valley is in eastern California on the Nevada border, 130 miles west-northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada and 106
miles east of Lone Pine, California. Furnace Creek Campground is a half-mile north of Furnace Creek Visitor Center on State Highway 190). NOTE: due to damage from a
thunderstorm, Scotty’s Castle is closed until 2019. Also damaged was the southern entrance to the park and to Badwater Basin, Hwy 178, Access to Badwater is now
only from the north (which is where our campsite is located).
