Madonna Comparison II

APAH Journal: Madonna Comparison
While historians may debate the concept of renaissance or when the Renaissance started, it is clear that within art
certain specific new features emerged at the start of the 14th century in Italy, and even more specifically, in
Florence. This development of structure, composition, and form is most clearly seen in a comparison of two
images of the Madonna and Child painted approximately twenty years apart. Analyze the differences between
these two works and explain how these changes function in the work of Giotto. (These works are reproduced in
your text.)
