Celebrate All Year! Don’t miss the opportunity to celebrate the New York State Woman Suffrage Centennial and to learn about Rochester’s role in the history of women’s rights. Events are planned throughout the community all year, including everything from exhibitions, lectures and book clubs to live theatrical and musical performances. In addition to the major exhibition at the Central Library of Rochester & Monroe County, check out VoteTilla, a weeklong navigational celebration of woman suffrage. The event will take place July 17–22, 2017, along the Erie Canal. A fleet of canal boats will set out from Seneca Falls and travel to Rochester, with stops at towns and villages along the way. Historical reenactors will perform in period costume, and local residents and organizations are encouraged to participate in the special events that will be held on land and water. The week concludes with a bang as Rochester is transformed into “Suffragist City,” welcoming VoteTilla with live music, fireworks, an old-fashioned suffrage parade, a celebration at the National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House, and more! Because of Women Like Her... Winning the Vote in New York Exhibition The Central Library of Rochester & Monroe County will host a major exhibition June 2 – October 14, 2017, that explores the role Rochester’s women played in the women’s rights and woman suffrage movements of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The exhibition will feature artifacts from many of Rochester’s cultural and educational institutions, allowing us to tell a more complete story than any one institution could do alone. Featured items include Susan B. Anthony’s dress, Martha Matilda Harper’s prototype for the original salon shampoo chair, a Bloomer costume, a variety of suffrage banners, pendants, and flyers, and so much more! Best of all, the exhibition will be free and open to the public! Throughout the fall, components of the exhibition will travel to libraries, schools, and other public venues, expanding its reach even further! Exhibition curated by: On Election Day 2016, nearly 10,000 people lined up inside Rochester’s Mt. Hope Cemetery to pay their respects to the most well-known leader of the 19th-century woman suffrage movement, Susan B. Anthony. It was the first time in history that Americans had the opportunity to cast a vote for a female presidential candidate on a major party line, and the crowd recognized that it was the work of Anthony and others like her who made the milestone possible. Ridarsky Kathryn Murano Santos Exhibition design by Exhibits and More In 2017, New York State celebrates the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote. A movement that began in Seneca Falls and Rochester in 1848 with the first and second women’s rights conventions saw its goal achieved in 1917. A state referendum meant that suffrage passed in New York State three years before a federal amendment extended that right to all U.S. women. Join us this year as the Rochester-area community celebrates the centennial of woman suffrage. Our theme, “Because of Women Like Her,” honors the role and value of all women and provides an opportunity to recognize the women who have inspired each of us, past and present. #BecauseOfWomenLikeHer RocSuffrage.org #RocSuffrage Pledge of Support Because of Women Like Her: Winning the Vote in New York State Because of Women Like Her: Winning the Vote in New York State An exhibition commemorating the centennial of the New York State Woman Suffrage Amendment June 2 – October 14, 2017 Hacker Hall, Rundel Memorial Building Central Library of Rochester & Monroe County I/We are delighted to support the 2017 NYS Woman Suffrage Centennial exhibition and celebration with a total gift of: □ Enclosed amount is $______________________ Please make checks payable to the Friends & Foundation of RPL Sponsorship opportunities: □ $30,000+ Exhibition sponsor □ $15,000 Exhibition entrance and title platform □ $10,000Highlighted topics/artifacts (6 available; select your preference): □ Haudenosaunee matriarchs □ Susan B.
