Fall Edition 2015
The Recreation Department Enjoyed a Fantastic Summer with
The Residents of The Grove at Valhalla!
GROVE CARNIVAL
We kicked off summer with a carnival
complete with a variety of carnival
games where the residents could
travel around the room to various
booths that were set up to try their
skills at the various activities including
Tin can Alley, Target Practice, Duck
Pond, Frog Jump and a few others.
Of course prizes were awarded for
each game and a good time was had
by all.
THE GARDEN CLUB
The Garden club was also busy
planting vegetables in the garden and
watching them grow as they were
lovingly watered and tended to. How
amazing to see all of the zucchini,
tomatoes, eggplants, cucumbers,
peppers and basil. The residents
of the Garden club enjoyed a fresh
salad made from everything that was
grown with some fresh Italian bread
and butter.
JULY 8TH, BEACH DAY
On July 8th, one of the hottest days
of the summer, everyone cooled off
with our Beach Day. While everyone
enjoyed the sounds of music of a
steel drum and thinking of the beach,
the Recreation staffed manned
the blenders to whip up some Pina
Coladas and Strawberry Daiquiris.
AUGUST HAT PARADE
We also began making our
homemade hats for our crazy hat
parade in August. Residents and staff
participated in a crazy hat parade
including our Administrator Jake, our
Concierge Abe, Maintenance Director
Nick and Director of Admission
Terry. How exciting to have so many
departments participate in this fun
event! There is no denying there was
lots of laughter in the room.
JULY 9TH, YANKEE GAME
On July 9th, a group of residents,
along with staff and volunteers,
traveled to the Bronx to see a Yankee
game. It was a great day with perfect
weather; the Yankees won, go
Yankees!

Resident Story: John & Cathy O’Grady
The Grove recently had the pleasure of welcoming two very
special new admissions. John and Cathy O’Grady arrived and were
escorted to the same room; a happily married couple! The staff quickly
took to them and were charmed by the commitment and love shared by
this dynamic duo. An unbreakable bond that touched the heart strings
of every member of The Grove- staff and residents alike.
John and Cathy met at a dance night in the basement of their
hometown church in Mt. Vernon, NY, on December 3rd, 1950. “I saw
her from across the room sitting next to her friends and I just knew she
was the one,” says John. After a magical night of dancing, and a long
walk home, the relationship began. On December 29th that same year,
ICE CREAM SOCIALS AND
WEEKLY BARBECUES
Were held throughout the summer as
well as Root beer Float day to end
the month of August.
John proposed to Cathy, and then married her on June 16th, 1951. John was a fireman for 38 years in
their hometown, Mt. Vernon, and his wife Cathy worked in the Missionaries office of Mt. Vernon. They
had and raised seven wonderful children.
Through thick and thin, this amazing couple persevered. In the summer of 2015, both John and
Cathy needed Skilled nursing Care, and together, they chose The Grove. It was very important to them
that they not be apart, even for the shortest amount of time. The Grove graciously provided them with

their own room and accommodations so they wouldn’t have to go a day without being apart.
“I only live for her,” John tells the staff at The Grove every day. It’s a beautiful thing. John and
Cathy have been married for 64 years, and counting! We wish this truly wonderful couple nothing but
happiness and love for many more years to come.

that discharge planning will begin on the day

Caregivers acting as advocates for
their family members should stay informed
about their medical progress, formulate a list
of questions for the medical personnel when
they make rounds so everyone has the same focus
for the patient, and to make sure the doctors and
nurses are aware of the home medications your
loved one is taking so they can be properly cared
for in the hospital.
Hospitals are becoming more open to families
input, as it helps for a smooth hospital stay and
transition of care when their loved one is discharged
to the community. As their advocate you should
inquire information about how to fill out a Health
Care Proxy on behalf of the patient, so that the
patient’s needs and wishes can respected in the
event that the patient cannot speak on their own
behalf. It is an easy form to fill out, it requires the
patient’s signature, a main health care proxy
agent, and alternate and two witnesses. It
does not require a Lawyer or Notary and can
be filled out at bedside.
