Managing your own Spam
Background
Spam is a huge problem these days. We do our best to keep the worst of the spam from
your inbox, but some does get through sometimes, and sometimes legitimate mail is blocked.
Current situation
We have two different kinds of notification messages. Each one requires different action on
your part.
Messages with subject: Spamhaus Filter Notification ( MailMarshal )
• This is self-service (added August 2008).
• Please access the Spam Console at http://pmailm02/SpamConsole/BlockedMail.aspx
(add it to favourites) and follow the instructions below
Messages with subject: MailMarshal Notification
• If you want these released, click reply and request release (this has not changed).
Helpdesk staff will check the message and release if appropriate.
Solution to manage your own spam
In order to manage your own spam, you can logon to the website
http://pmailm02/spamconsole/blockedmail.aspx when logged on to a PC as yourself. It is
fairly self explanatory, but details follow below.
How to use Spam Console
1. Log onto PC at NMIT as yourself
2. In Internet browser, go to http://pmailm02/spamconsole/blockedmail.aspx
3. Click Add to Favourites
4. Select the folder you want to check from the drop down (usually Spamhaus Zen)
(continued over page………)

5. Check for emails you want to release.
Take care with this process. MOST of the blocked email will probably be SPAM.
Look carefully at the mail – you should be able to see who it is from, the subject and
the first line.
6. Release selected mail.
Tick the box of any email you want to release (you can check several). Then click
“Unblock” or “Safe Senders” (see below) – the email will be delivered to your normal
email address. It will not be released to other recipients.
7. Add to safe senders.
If you find email is blocked from a source that you believe is always trusted, you can
select a message and click “Safe sender”. The message will be released and the
email address added to your “safe senders” list.
8. Add to blocked senders.
If you find mail that you know is NOT trustworthy, you can select a message and click
Block Sender. Those messages will always be blocked by Mailmarshal.
9. Manage Senders
You can click “Manage Senders” to review a list of senders you have
blocked or allowed. Email sent to you from the "safe" senders will never be
quarantined by MailMarshal anti-Spam policies. Email sent to you from the
"blocked" senders will always be quarantined by MailMarshal.

10. Allow someone else to manage your Spam
Someone else can access and manage your Spam if you give them “delegate”
access.
- click on User settings
- click on Delgates
- in the Add Delgate box, type AD\ followed by the user name (eg AD\patsy.anderson)
- click Add
- that’s it….no need to click anything else!
11. Help
Have a look at the Help – there are very clear instructions there, arranged according
to the section you are looking at.
