Autumn Term 1 – “Titanic”

Our topic this half term is Titanic
English
In class we will… be writing diaries, letters and
newspaper articles linked to our topic – The Titanic.
We will learn how to set out our writing effectively
and develop our technical vocabulary and use of
exciting words. Through drama we will imagine how
it must have felt to have been on board the Titanic.
We will have debates about why it happened and the
fairness of the class system.
At home you can …encourage your child to keep
their own diary. Borrow books about the Titanic
from the library at Canada Water. Use the internet
to read news articles about the Titanic. April 2012
was the 100th anniversary, so you can watch/read
T.V. programmes and special reports.
Maths
In class children will… be learning about number
and place value. Children will continue to read and
write numbers up to 10,000 and 100,000. They will
also be rounding numbers to the nearest 10,000 and
100,000. Children will also consolidate tenths,
hundredths and decimal equivalents e.g. 4 tenths =
0.4; 27 hundredths = 0.27.
Children will also consolidate using the formal
written method of addition to add two three-digit
numbers
At home you can…allow children to solve money
problems and also work with different units of
measurement e.g. children can work out how much
change in the shop.
RE
In class children will… be learning about Judaism.
Children will learn about celebrations and special
meals. The context of the Passover festival, the
story attached to it, how it is celebrated, its inner
meaning and symbolism. Children will also learn about
Moses and the giving of the Ten Commandments
.
At home you can… discuss what it means to be part
of a community. What responsibilities do different
people in the community have?
Class Information
PE kit needs to be brought into school on Monday
and taken home on Friday including suitable
trainers.
Home work
Reading and multiplication tables – daily
English – Monday (Comprehension) and Wednesday
(Grammar)
Maths – Tuesday and Thursday
Spellings – Given on Monday, test on Friday
Children should also continue to use Mathletics
and Lexia to support their learning.
Our trip this term is to Cutty Sark on 5th
October.
Science
In class we will… be investigating Life Processes.
We will focus in particular on the changes as
humans develop into old age. We will look at the
life cycles of plants, animals and humans.
At home you can… discuss the life cycle of
various animals, reproduction and their gestation
periods. Furthermore, take out science books
from the library and give children the opportunity
to research facts.
Topic
In class we will… be learning about the history of
The Titanic. We will look at how people used to
live in Edwardian times. We will compare elements
of the past to today – how people travelled and
why people took journeys to other countries.. In
geography we will look at the map of the world and
plot the route taken across the Atlantic Ocean.
We will look at why America was so appealing to
many people. In Art and ICT we are going to work
together to make a class display of ‘treasure’ left
at the bottom of the ocean. This will involve
sewing, collage, printing and paint programs.
At home you can… research the Titanic. Find out
key information about the passengers, crew and
artefacts that were on board. Make fish and
other sea creatures out of scraps of fabric or
recycled materials.
