SHELTERS
1. The Red Scare was real. Millions of Americans built Fallout Shelters in order to be protected from Nuclear war.
Students will answer the questions which connect to the media images that follow:

1. Draw in the symbol for a “Nuclear Fallout shelter”. Make it at least 4 inches square and be detailed.
2. In 25+ words, describe what a “Fallout Shelter” looks like and explain what it is supposed to do to protect
people.

Part Two – Two Weeks of Shelter Life
Students will draw a diagram that shows your fallout shelter.
Watch the following Civil Defense Video to better see how people planned to live in the
event of a nuclear blast in their area.

2. Students will create a shelter plan for a builder to see that could be used to build this
shelter. Assume that you are a family of 4 people
a. Use your ipod to look at “google images” for “nuclear fallout shelter.”
Rubric:
1. Include a diagram of
a. Page 1: Sleeping quarters
i. Include storage for one bag or suitcase of clothes per person
ii. Include outline diagrams of 4 beds
b. Page 2: Food storage organization systems of shelving, counters, cabinets,
storage etc.
i. Include shelving for 84 cans – 6 per day for two weeks
ii. Include water supply storage – 14 gallons
iii. Include clothing storage plans
iv. Electricity needed, appliances included, etc.
c. Part 3: Include some type of facility for the family to gather together = “family
room”
i. Include 4 games/10 books/2 projects that could be done while living for
two weeks in your shelter.
ii. Include furniture (couches, chairs, tables)
Extra Credit Opportunity –
1. Make a video with some of your friends or family which would help people be more prepared for a nuclear
bomb attack. See if the school news would be willing to play the video as an example of student work in their
history class.
