CATHOLIC CO-EDUCATION YEARS 7-12
Thursday 3rd November 2016
Dear Parents, Students and Friends of St Patrick’s College,
FINAL WEEK FOR SENIOR STUDENTS
This is the final week for our Senior students (Year 11 and 12) before swotvac and the TQA
examination period. It is an important week of academic focus and preparation by students
under the guidance of their teachers. For our Year 12s, this week brings to an end their
formal learning in a secondary school context. In speaking with our Year 12s today there
is a sense of excitement and anticipation as the end of secondary schooling is just around
the corner and the future is full of hope and possibilities. There is also a sense of loss and
anxiety because the security and structure that school has provided is coming to an end
and the friendships shared with students and teachers is about to change. I believe we
can assist our Year 12s through this process by just listening to their thoughts and feelings
without judgement and with understanding and encouragement.
I ask all parents and guardians of Year 12s to encourage students to make sensible
choices during this time and to keep the focus on the ‘bigger picture’ of their future. Making
right choices and decisions within the boundaries of College regulations is extremely
important as we have a school to run as usual. The safety of all students and staff and
the focus on learning for all students is our prime purpose and cannot be compromised
by any antics. Respect for St Patrick’s College and for the property of other schools is
extremely important. On a positive note, the behaviour of our Year 12 students in recent
years has been excellent and our current students have inherited improved traditions
as they negotiate the final weeks of school. Key among these traditions is the ‘dress up
theme days’, the breakfast, House farewells, the academic awards and the Eucharist
and Valete dinner on Friday evening. These are positive celebrations of school life
in keeping with the Mission of St Patrick’s College. I thank the Senior School team
of Dr Colman, Mrs McInnes, Mr Mohr, Mrs Viney, Ms White, Mrs von Steiglitz and
Ms Hughes
for their coordination of these events and their support for our students

PARENTS AND FRIENDS ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The Parents and Friends Annual General Meeting will be held this year
on Tuesday 15 November. It will be held in the College staffroom and will
commence at 7.30pm. A short general meeting will follow and there will be supper
provided afterwards. We are looking to fill at least two positions next year, but
nominations can be made for all executive positions; these include the president,
vice-president, secretary and treasurer.
The president and the secretary’s positions will become vacant that night with
Greg Boon and Anne Britton coming to the end of their involvement with the
College at the end of this year.
Please consider being part of the monthly P&F meetings. There is no fund raising
involved and the positions themselves do not require a lot of time. Meetings
start at 7.30pm and are over by 9pm. The P&F funds are vital in contributing to
ongoing infrastructure and equipment around our College and it is a good way to
keep in touch with what is happening in the College and meet other parents.
Please contact me for further information.
Anne Britton, Secretary.

St Patrick’s Green played Scotch Blue at Croagh Patrick on
a beautiful spring day. Scotch won the toss and batted first.
Matt Saunders made a fine start knocking the stumps over in
his first over. After this Scotch consolidated and kept the run
rate ticking over with some good partnerships. After the drinks
break Co-Captain Declen Chugg brought on the spinners
Jack Ross and Luke Spencer and placed careful fields to
successfully tie the batsmen down. This allowed Jayden
Butler to break though with his accurate medium pacers taking
two quick wickets thanks to good catches by Joe Chapman
and Jack Ross. Spencer Hayes and Aidan Williams both had
wicket maidens in their second spell and Jack Ross had a
double wicket maiden in his last over. This flurry of wickets with
wonderful fielding including great catches to Joe Chapman,
Will Mackenzie and Aidan Williams contained Scotch to just to
just 10 runs in their last 10 overs.
St Patrick’s openers Luke Spencer and Spencer Hayes made
a fine 50 opening partnership before retiring. Joe Chapman
and Andrew Saunders kept the score ticking over in the middle
order before Jayden Butler fired a quick 10 runs. Jackson
Howard and William Mackenzie weathered the return of the
opening bowlers to see St Patrick’s past the winning total
before Spencer Hayes returned to the field to improve his run
tally to 38 with a series of fours. A great team effort by the St
Patrick’s players.

The College SunSmart policy is based on recommendations
made by Cancer Council Tasmania and aims to ensure, as is
reasonably practicable, that students and staff maintain a healthy
UV balance by encouraging sun protection when UV Index levels
reach 3 and above and safe sun exposure for vitamin D.
In Tasmania over the past week or so UV index levels have
reached 3 and above and therefore staff and students are
encouraged to use a combination of sun protection measures.
Be SunSmart when UV Index Levels are 3 and above.
