helped us. I hear that over in Massachusetts
Bay the Puritans are having problems with a
lady named Anne Hutchinson, who is bold
enough to question John Winthrop’s views
on religion. That’s the latest news from here. I
miss everyone.

New Netherland was founded by the Dutch.
Most colonists in New Netherland were fur
traders and farmers. After a while, Peter
Stuyvesant took control of New Netherland.
After a while, the English took control of
New Netherland without even a fight. New
Netherland then became called New York and
became the first of the middle colonies. New
Jersey also became a middle colony. One of
the largest religious groups in New Jersey was
the Quakers. The Quakers were a Protestant
group that did not follow formal religious
practices and dressed plainly. One Quaker who
started a colony to protect other Quakers from
the mean treatment they were receiving was
William Penn. In the middle colonies, farmers were able to grow large amounts of food
because they had good climate and rich land.
They grew staple crops, which are crops that
are always needed by people.

Dear Cousin Joseph,
I like being in America. It has been lonely since

born here in America. It was exciting when we

that we all want to protect the general good.
