New Netherland then became called New York and became the first of the middle colonies. New Jersey also became a middle colony. One of the largest religious groups in New Jersey was the Quakers. The Quakers were a Protestant group that did not follow formal religious practices and dressed plainly. One Quaker who started a colony to protect other Quakers from the mean treatment they were receiving was William Penn. In the middle colonies, farmers were able to grow large amounts of food because they had good climate and rich land. They grew staple crops, which are crops that are always needed by people.
