PROWEIN 2016: Come meet the French Terra Vitis® Winemakers

PROWEIN 2016:
Come meet the French Terra Vitis® Winemakers!
WeinGenuss, Lebendiger Boden !
Come discover sustainable vine growing implemented by the winegrowers who
have adopted the TERRA VITIS® approach. In Prowein, they will be more than 55
from all-over France!
Environmentally-friendly vine growers, concerned with ecology and transparency,
have enthusiastically adopted the TERRA VITIS® approach and will be actively
present at the show to share their experience in sustainable vine growing with you.
Grape growing with passion and reason
In total respect of our living earth
For pleasure and health around the world,
This is the motto of the Terra Vitis® grape producers!
Terra Vitis®
Credibility and experience for winemakers seeking healthy grape production
based on respect for the soil and for the consumer.
For over twenty years now, grape growers have increasingly been turning to new practices. In
Beaujolais in 1998, a movement took root, federating discerning vinegrowers driven by respect for
the soil and respect for their fellow man. Terra Vitis® is the name of this movement, now a nationwide group with over 500 members from many different French growing areas, from young
vinegrowers with the future at their fingertips to large estates with deeply-rooted traditions.
Sustainable grape production entails rational use of treatments applied to the vines. Where risk of
disease has been identified, required treatments are applied in scrupulously-defined doses. The
overall objective involves intervening as little as possible using products which could produce an
environmental impact.
One key word defines the grower’s approach: observation. Parcels are examined with a magnifying
glass to scout for any symptoms of disease. Pests are counted (example: grape worms) as are the
beneficial insects – tiny insects which feast on damaging pests – before deciding on what crop
management technique to implement. Such decisions also take into account the specificities of
1/4
each plot and its vulnerability to disease. Integrated agriculture is one of the fundamental aspects of
the Terra Vitis® dynamic, which includes 95 best practices. The goal is to bring back the most natural
vineyards, with grass and flower cover and insects that bear witness to living soil and biodiversity.
The winemaker benefits from the savoir-faire and experience of technicians and colleagues. Advice
and counsel on vine-management methods are available. Fifteen years after its foundation, Terra
Vitis® is proud to state that it has trained and worked with over 500 winemakers.
Capitalizing on its skills and experience, Terra Vitis® continues to draw new members who work on
their first observations together and benefit from the recommendations issued by the technical
support bodies, before “fledging their wings”…
Terra Vitis® is the source of constantly updated information based on the best practices shared
among vinegrowers from many different regions. Members can more easily capitalize on
experience. Terra Vitis® learns from all the progress made in improving the harmonious co-existence
between flora, fauna and the vineyard – to the mutual benefit of all!
“Terra Vitis®: Plaisir du Vin – Terre Vivante” the graphic charter emphases the importance of
living soil and the pleasure of wine
Terra Vitis® members use and evaluate winemakers’ techniques and interventions. Their demanding
approach, accompanied by innovative savoir-faire based on rigour and passion, has widened to
include every French growing area. The time has come to work with the consumer.
In 2016, Terra Vitis® adapted the logo for the german
market: the logo expresses this balanced approach and
strengthen its communications. The visuals include a
slightly educational aspect, for the new logo features the
Golden-eyed Chrysoperla or Lacewing - so precious to
vine-growing.
There are many insects, aphids and small mammals which can damage vines and spoil grape
production. There is however a natural, inexpensive, effective and above all environmentally-friendly
method: the use of insects which are beneficial to the crop, such as the highly predatory
Chrysoperla carnea. Chrysoperla larvae live amidst aphid colonies and feed on the aphids.
Terra Vitis® expertise is acknowledged worldwide
Buyers from Japan, Canada and Northern Europe rapidly demonstrated their interest in the Terra
Vitis® approach and strict specifications.
Environmental certification for the Terra Vitis® process:
The French Ministry of Agriculture has awarded Terra Vitis® the Environmental Certification on all
region. This challenging, hard-to-get standard is awarded to winemakers entitled to use the Terra
Vitis® name.
