Safer Stores
Stores around the country
will open earlier this year than
ever before - some as early as
10 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.
Toys ‘R’ Us may be some
shoppers’ first stop as some
of their stores will open at 10
p.m. Thanksgiving day.
Best Buy, Target and Kohls
will join Walmart in opening
many of their stores at Midnight for Black Friday.
Many other retailers will
open by 4 a.m. or later.
Because of the prolonged economic downturn over the past
few years, retailers have been
luring buyers with great Black
Friday deals.
Shoppers looking for a big
screen LCD or Plasma TV are
in luck. Because of the launch
of 3D TVs, a backstock of
qualiity LCD, LED, and Plasma
HDTVs has built up - meaning
that retailers may be likelier to
mark these down to get customers in the door.
Black Friday sales have lead
to some sad scenes in recent
years. In 2008, a Walmart
employee was trampled to
death by shoppers in upstate
New York. More recently,
customers have been assaulted
and knocked down by other
shoppers.
Target is one chain that
plans on boosting crowd
control, keeping shoppers safe
while allowing for the annual
shopping fun to continue.

Trojan Times Seniors Explore College Options
It’s finally that time in your
life come one of the hardest
decisions you will ever face. It’s
the end of your senior year and
you are deciding which college
is right for you. You have been
given many scholarships offers and have been accepted to
many different colleges but you
don’t know which one will fit
you best. You might just go with
whatever college your parents
want you to go to or whatever
college your friends are attending but before you do that it
may be a better idea to take a
look at your choices and see
which is right for you.
Some kids from around here
went and visited some of their
choices. Dillon, Trevor, Joe, and
Kyle all went to Northeast community college in Norfolk and
found that the campus was a
little different than they expected. They found that the campus
is very small and it only houses
300 people. The dorms are
small and to each dorm room
there are four people. To some
of these kids that was what they
were looking for but for the
others they didn’t like that the
campus was so small.
Trevor went to look at the
computer programing that they
are so well known for. He said it

was great; they had everything.
All the computers were up to
date and many of them were pcs
but the graphic designing computers were macs. For him this
was a college he wanted but not
everyone wants to go to school
for computer programing.
Others students want a school
more like Doane. It’s a much
bigger campus that has classes
that teach u for jobs in science
and medical work. It’s a four
year college that cost $20,000 a
year and has one of the highest
graduation rates in the state. As
u can see this campus is not for
everyone either.
People like Trevor want a
smaller school with teaching
in computers while others go
to schools like Doane so they
can pursue a carrier in a much
higher field of work. So before
you go and find a college make
sure u take the time to look at
your choices and find the one
that is right for you.

Turkey’s Origins As
Thanksgiving Fowl
This time of the year we start
thinking about the Thanksgiving bird the turkey. There is a
lot of background history of the
turkey.
History of the turkey as our
national Thanksgiving meal is a
bit of a mystery. Nobody knows
how the turkey earned a place at
the dinner table every November.
The first Thanksgiving meal
was beef and fowl. Some historians say the early settlers were
inspired by the queen’s action
and roast a turkey instead of a
goose.
In North America, the native
bird is the wild turkey. From
what Benjamin Franklin claimed
this made
the turkey a
more suitable national bird for
the United
States than
the bald
eagle. The
bald eagle
may be
America’s bird 364 days a year,
but the turkey has one day all to
its self-Thanksgiving.
There is a significant amount
of cultural significance in relation to why do we eat turkey on
Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is
a holiday that was passed down
from the early American settlers
who arrive here from England.
Eating turkey is not totally
“American.”
The British have long eaten
turkey as part of their holiday
festivities and the custom of
doing so was continued once
the new settlers arrived here in
America. The Pilgrims has to
choose a meat source that was
big enough to feed this large
group without incurring major
costs.
Turkeys could be purchased
in the spring and be fattened up
over many months in order to
make them bigger for Thanksgiving Day.
Many people used the
meat from
the turkey to

other foods
that were

Turkey was
the best choice for the early setters that wanted a special bird

occasions.

season. Thanksgiving marks the
beginning of the holiday season
in the United States.
There are many stories of
people being gifted turkeys
for Thanksgiving meals. There
are many cookbooks that offer many different recipes and
variations for preparing the
perfect Thanksgiving Day feast.
The turkey in American culture
is synonymous with holidays.
Most Americans do not prepare turkeys on a regular basis.
Because of this, turkey does
have a very special place in
American culture as a food that
is prepared for with significant
amounts of preparation for a
special event.

I love Thanksgiving because of all the food. My
favorite food on Thanksgiving is mashed potatoes and
gravy. I think Thanksgiving is an awesome holiday
because you get to be with a bunch of your family.
You can share your home with others and giving them
love and welcoming.
~
The thing I like the most about Thanksgiving is eating turkey and sometime I get to eat the turkey I shot!
The other thing I like about it is getting together with
the family, having fun and celebrating it. I don’t always celebrate it with the family though; I sometimes
spend it with my friends and their family.
~
One thing that I like about Thanksgiving is watching the Lions and Cowboys games. The Lions game
is usually around noon while the Cowboys game is
later in the afternoon. There are other football games
on, but these are the traditional ones. I think that Lions
fans will have more to cheer about this year. I also
think that Nebraska fans will be especially interested
with two former Nebraska students, Ndamukong Suh
and Kyle Vanden Bosch, starting on the defensive line.

Senior Abbie Hunke is going
out for basketball. Her goal is to
be a team leader and win games
more than one for the year.
She thinks the season will be
good with a new coach. Hunke
added that she wants to learn

The head coach is Mr. John

Video Game Review: Rocksmith
The First Game You Want to Learn Something From
Music games, after having the
genre overpopulated largely by
far too many Guitar Hero titles
being released in far too short of
a time period, are dying. Someone apparently forgot to send
Ubisoft that memo, because
they are currently hard at work
on Rocksmith. The kicker, and
what makes this game cooler

this game works

you slap a plugin adapter on the
body! Just use the
provided adapter to
plug in your guitar
into your USB port
and go crazy.
First off, does
it work? I had
a chance to play it, and that
answer is a resounding yes.
Each string of the guitar has a
specific color, and the notes fly
toward you in a style that we’ve
all become very used to after
countless rhythm games. With
difficulty that scales mid-song
through upwards of 20-30 dif-
ferent levels,
you will

Just in time for this year’s Christmas wish lists, video game maker Ubisoft has
released “Rocksmith” - a video game that marries real guitar play with video gaming. The game is available as a stand-along game or with a bundle (seen above) that
includes a full-size guitar.

Chris Burger bought it, and I
would have to say, it is pretty
amazing! Since this was such a
new experience for me (I have
never played a guitar before), I
started out on the easiest song.
You start off each song by
checking to
make sure
your guitar
is in tune
- not a big deal. But since the
game knows that you’re playing
the right notes based on your
pitch, it’s pretty important that
you have a guitar that’ll stay in

manage that, right? As you can
