It was held in upstate New York in 1848. ELIZABETH CADY STANTON (1815-1902) Elizabeth Cady Stanton whose husband was opposed to slavery, traveled to London in 1840 for an anti-slavery convention. There she met and became friends with Lucretia Mott who was also going to the World Anti-Slavery Convention. Cady Stanton and Mott later organized the Seneca Falls Convention in New York to promote equal rights for women. Elizabeth Cady Stanton wrote the Declaration of Sentiments which she modeled after the Declaration of Independence. LUCRETIA MOTT (1793-1880) Lucretia Mott was a Quaker who went to London for the World Anti-Slavery Convention in 1840. She was angered when she and other female delegates from the U.S. could not attend because of their gender. She, along with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, fought for women’s rights. FREDERICK DOUGLASS (1818-1895) Frederick Douglass, a former slave and editor of the anti-slavery newspaper “North Star”, also supported equal rights for women. He attended the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention. When a resolution to demand suffrage for women failed to pass at the Seneca Falls Convention, Frederick Douglass spoke out in support of it. His speech convinced the members of the convention to vote for the resolution asking for women’s right to vote. SUSAN B. ANTHONY (1820-1906) Susan B. Anthony did not attend the Seneca Falls Convention. She was a reformer in the temperance movement. When she met Elizabeth Cady Stanton in 1851, she dedicated her life to fighting for women’s rights. Women were finally granted the right to vote by the 19th Amendment, which was ratified in 1920.
