Harvard University has been acquiring scientific instruments on a continuous basis
for teaching and research since 1672. The Collection of Historical Scientific
Instruments, which was established in 1948 to preserve this apparatus as a resource
for teaching and research in the history of science and technology, has become one
of the three largest university collections of its kind in the world. Originally
associated with the Harvard library system, the Collection was placed under the
stewardship of the Department of History of Science in 1987.
The first public schools, the first battles for American independence, the first
abolitionist newspaper, Massachusetts has always been a leader in the quest for
equal rights and opportunities.

Mary Baker Eddy Library Mapparium
The mapparium at the Mary Baker Eddy Library is definitely worth a visit. It is a
three-story, three-dimensional stained-glass globe that you walk through, The globe
surrounds you on all sides and is lit up from the outside. Created in 1935, the
mapparium is a fascinating snapshot of the geo-political borders of the early 20th
century. I enjoyed the beauty of being surrounded on all sides by stained/painted
glass and the amazement of how much the world has changed in just 80 years (one Tue-Sun 10-4
lifetime!). The acoustics of being inside a glass ball were also really fun. There is a
small admission fee and tours start every few minutes. While the tours only take 15
minutes, give yourself some extra time to explore the rest of the library. Photos are
not permitted in the mapparium, but you can visit their photo gallery here:

the church sexton, Robert Newman, and Vestryman Capt. John Pulling, Jr. climbed

were marching to Lexington and Concord by sea across the Charles River and not by

11 mile paved path that follows closely that taken at the beginning of the
Revolutionary War. The Minuteman Bikeway passes through the historic area
where the American Revolution began in April 1775.
Today, the Minuteman Bikeway is one of the most popular and successful rail-trails
in the United States, enjoyed for both healthy recreation and transportation.
The bikeway has become a new type of “Main Street” where neighbors and
strangers alike come together while riding, walking, or skating on the path.

In 2008, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy inducted the Minuteman Bikeway into the
national Rail-Trail Hall of Fame.
Built by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on an inactive railroad right of way,
the Minuteman Bikeway has become a treasured regional resource, used by local
residents and visitors from near and far.
Refreshments and toilets are available at
Depot Park in Bedford, Thorndike Field in
Arlington (seasonal outhouses), Lexington
Visitor’s Center, Alewife Station, and nearby
business districts along the bikeway.
Unreserved seating is available on a firstcome, first-served basis.
Connecting to the Alewife “T” Station in Cambridge, the bikeway provides an easy
way for bicyclists and pedestrians to travel to and from subway and bus lines,
serving to reduce automobile traffic in the area.
The bikeway is collectively managed and maintained by the four communities it
passes through: Bedford, Lexington, Arlington, and Cambridge.
