SchoolstobeReferenced AliceBirney/NorthwoodsMiddle–2007to2012 AliceBirney/NorthwoodsisalargeurbanmiddleschoolintheNorthAreaofCharleston,SouthCarolina.Atthetimewhen Dr.Bartlettservedasprincipal,thislong-establishedschoolservedover800studentsingrades6–8.Thepovertyrated duringthatperiodwasover90%.Thestudentpopulationwasover85%minoritywithnearly15%ofthepopulationbeing EnglishLanguageLearners. CaneBayMiddle–2014toPresent CaneBayMiddleSchool(CBMS)isasuburban/ruralmiddleschoolservinggrades5–8.Situatedinoneofthefastest growingareasoftheSoutheast,CBMSopenedin2012.Thestudentpopulationhasdoubledfromjustover450studentsto nearly950inthefive-yearhistoryoftheschool.Currently,theschool’spovertyindexis43%.Thedemographicsofthe schoolmirrorthecounty:55%white,35%African-American,andtheremaining10%representmultipleotherracial/ethnic categories. TCHSislocatedintheruraltownofPerry,Florida,andservesapproximately700students.The schoolteamhasworkeddiligentlytoimprovegraduationratesfrom64%in2013-14to81%. TCHS“oncampus”dualenrollmentopportunitieshaveincreasedfrom3classesto10classesoffered.TheCareerand TechnicalEducation(CTE)programwasasingledraftingclasswith10students,butcurrently220studentsareenrolledina CTEcourse.Thenumberofindustrycertificationshashadanexplosiveincreasefrom4to98studentsearninganindustry certificationeachyear.BiologyEOCscoresincreasedfrom52%to77%proficiency,andUSHistoryEOCscoresincreased 30%to70%proficiency.Additionally,studentinvolvementhasseenadrasticincreasewithstudent-centeredclub participationincreasingfrom5%involvementratesto52%. WesleyUnderwood Principal,HobbsMiddleSchool,Milton,Florida(SantaRosaCounty) [email protected] th WesUnderwoodiscurrentlycompletinghis20 yearineducation.HereceivedhisBachelors ofArtsinMiddleSchoolMathandScienceEducationin1996fromtheUniversityofWest Florida.Mr.UnderwoodfurtheredhiseducationattheUniversityofWestFloridaby completingaMaster’sDegreeinEducationalLeadershipin2006.Duringhis20-yearcareer, Mr.UnderwoodhasservedtheSantaRosaCountySchoolDistrictasamiddleschool mathematicsteacher,scienceteacher,andschooltechnologycontact.Heworkedinintensive remediationbyteachingthelowest25%ofstudentsinmath,reading,andwritingatHolleyNavarreMiddleSchool.HecontinuedhisteachingcareeratNavarreHighSchoolbyworkingas ascienceteacherandDeanofStudentforsixyears.Mr.UnderwoodwentontobecomeanAssistantPrincipal,County CoordinatorofMathematicsandScience,andfinally,inFebruaryof2016,hebecamePrincipalofHobbsMiddleSchool (HMS). ThisisMr.Underwood’sfirstcompleteyearasprincipalofHMS,a6–8schoollocatedinMilton,Florida(asmalltownin Florida’sNorthwestPanhandleinSantaRosaCounty).HMShas720studentswith58%receivingfreeandreducedlunch. Thestudentpopulationisverystableandrarelyincreasesordecreasesbymorethan20students.HMShasalargeESE studentpopulation—twoEBDunitsandtwoCBSAunits.Theschoolalsohasadvancedcurriculumwithmanyhonorsand advancedclasses.StudentsareabletoprogressthroughAlgebraandGeometrybeforeenteringhighschool.LastyearHMS receivedaB-ratingfromtheStateofFlorida.
