1 Welcome Commencement is indeed a fitting name for this occasion. It is the day in which we recall with great pride the achievements of our graduates attained in their time at Loyola Marymount University. It is the day of dreams fulfilled, of challenges surmounted, and opportunities rewarded. But Commencement also marks a new beginning for our graduates, as we confidently send them out into the world to put into practice the University ideals of education, service, and the promotion of justice. With sincere gratitude, we honor the role that our graduates’ parents, spouses, and families have played in helping them arrive at this day. We hope that no matter where our graduates’ lives may lead them, they will always remember Loyola Marymount University as their home on the bluff. The joyful atmosphere of Commencement draws from its tradition of dignity. To ensure a safe and decorous ceremony, we request that graduates, participants, and guests avoid unnecessary conversation and remain seated during the exercises. Only authorized photographers will be permitted on the stage area during the ceremonies. For Undergraduate Commencement, the Emergency Medical Service stations are located on the north sides of Malone Student Center and St. Robert’s Hall. For Graduate Commencement, the Emergency Medical Service station is located on the south side of Gersten Pavilion. Ushers are available in the event that assistance is required. We request that applause be withheld during the conferral of degrees until each college or school has been acknowledged and all candidates have returned to their seats. Graduates and guests are asked to remain seated until the recessional. It is with pleasure that the Trustees, Regents, President, Faculty, and Alumni welcome all in attendance to the ninety-second Commencement Exercises of Loyola Marymount University. 2 Table of Contents Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony 4 Graduate Commencement Ceremony 6 University History 8 President’s Fritz B. Dean, School of Education Recessional 7 University History The Encouragement of Learning The Education of the Whole Person The Service of Faith The Promotion of Justice The names Loyola and Marymount have been associated with the tradition of excellence in Catholic higher education for nearly five hundred years and have held a presence in Los Angeles throughout the city’s history. St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, sanctioned the first Jesuit boys’ school in Gandia, Spain, in 1545. The Roman College, later known as the Gregorian University, was founded six years later for the study of humane letters, theology, and philosophy. These institutions set the precedent for the hundreds of Jesuit high schools, colleges, and universities that were established around the world. The Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary have also held a commitment to education since their establishment by Father Jean Gailhac in 1849. Their original Institute in Beziers, France, was founded in 1834 and came to include an orphanage and boarding school for young women. Loyola Marymount University is the successor to the first institution of higher learning in Southern California: St. Vincent’s College for Boys, inaugurated in 1865 by the Vincentian Fathers in Los Angeles. When this school closed in 1911, members of the Society of Jesus opened the high school division of their Los Angeles College. Rapid growth promoted the Jesuits to commence the collegiate department that same year, seek a new campus in 1917, and incorporate as Loyola College of Los Angeles in 1918. Relocating to the present Westchester campus in 1929, the school achieved university status one year later. Graduate instruction began in 1920 with the foundation of St. Vincent’s Law School (now Loyola Law School). The Graduate Division was established in 1950, although graduate work had formed an integral part of the Teacher Education Program during the preceding two years. Sisters of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary were sent to Los Angeles 1923 to found their first West Coast school. Ten years later, they opened Marymount Junior College in Westwood, retaining the Marymount name that had been used at their schools on the East Coast and in Europe. The school transferred to a new campus in Palos Verdes in 1960. Eight years later, Marymount College moved again, this time to the Westchester campus of Loyola University as an autonomous college. At this juncture, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, who had established a presence in California in 1912, joined the Marymount sisters as partners. After five years of sharing faculties and facilities, Loyola University and Marymount College merged in July 1973 and formed Loyola Marymount University. Through this union, the expanded school maintained the mission of Catholic higher education in Los Angeles. In articulating a vision for this unique collegiate enterprise, the Board of Trustees turned to the rich history of the Jesuit educational philosophy as well as to the history of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange. They also recognized the variety of religious traditions represented among the dedicated faculty and staff that complemented and enhanced the school’s heritage of Catholic values. 8 Fred Kiesner Ph.D. Dr. Fred Kiesner received his MBA from Northwestern University. In 1984, he completed his Ph.D. in Management and Education at Claremont. He currently holds the Conrad N. Hilton Chair of Entrepreneurship in the Department of Management at LMU and has been the recipient of numerous grants to develop entrepreneurship programs. Dr. Kiesner joined Loyola Marymount University’s College of Business Administration in 1974, after a career in sales management. This background readied him to share real-world experiences and practical advice with students. Through a teaching style that emphasizes the human element in the increasingly depersonalized business environment, Dr. Kiesner creatively helps students discover their own abilities, learn to think on their feet, grow in ethical self-confidence, and build their own futures. At both graduate and undergraduate levels, he advises and mentors his students with sincerity and dedication. As John Wholihan, Dean of the College of Business Administration, notes, “In working with his students to help them compete on the national level, Fred not only prepares them for their career in business, but for their lives as men and women for others.” Dr. Kiesner is Director of the International Area and Chair of the International Scholarship Committee for the Westchester Rotary Club. His travels as a visiting professor have taken him to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, the University of Paris, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, and the University of Ireland in Limerick, where he was a Fulbright Teaching-Research Scholar in 1987-1988. He has received a series of grants to nurture free enterprise on Sakhalin Island in Russia. He has also authored over 150 articles on business, educational, and entrepreneurial topics, and has made over 200 presentations. But perhaps his most telling accomplishment is the fact that the University’s business students have named him the Teacher of the Year seven times. For aside from his numerous academic and professional accomplishments, Dr. Kiesner has remained a man of wit, warmth, and unflagging spirit. In the words of Dean Wholihan, “Fred Kiesner is the quintessential LMU faculty member. Dedication to student learning is the first and last of his principles.” 9 The President’s Fritz B. Burns Distinguished Teaching Award This award was established in 1993 to encourage and recognize excellence in teaching at Loyola Marymount University. This faculty member is recognized by his peers and the President for his distinguished teaching, dedication to the University, and committment to research. Honorary Degree Recipient and Undergraduate Commencement Speaker Goldie Hawn Goldie Hawn—Hollywood’s golden girl and an entertainment industry powerhouse—was born in Washington, D.C. A trained dancer, she operated her own studio while majoring in Drama at American University in Washington, D.C., which invited her to address its graduating class in 2002. Ms. Hawn made her television debut in the cast of the 1967-1968 ABC sitcom “Good Morning World.” She was subsequently cast on the variety hour “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In,” and the ditzy go-go dancer she played soon became a prominent regular of this wildly popular comedy series. She made her film debut as a dancer in the Disney musical film “The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band,” where she met her partner of twenty-one years, Kurt Russell. In 1970, she won both the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for her first major film role, playing Walter Matthau’s flower child fiancée in “Cactus Flower.” Steven Spielberg cast Ms. Hawn in her first serious role in his 1974 drama “The Sugarland Express,” in which she portrayed a mother who helps her husband escape from prison so that they can reclaim their baby son. Another of her most memorable roles is that of a young society woman who enlists in the army, in “Private Benjamin,” for which she received an Oscar nomination in 1981. In all, she has been appeared more than thirty films, testifying to her versatility as both a comedic and dramatic actress, including “Shampoo” (1975), “Swing Shift” (1984), “Overboard” (1987), “Bird on a Wire” (1990), “Death Becomes Her” (1992), “The First Wives Club” (1996), and most recently, “The Banger Sisters” (2002). As an actress, she has been nominated for the Golden Globe eight times and for the Emmy Award three times. Ms. Hawn has been an active creative force behind the camera on projects that demonstrate her commitment to probing complex social issues. She directed the 1997 television movie “Hope,” the story of a young girl in the American South in the turbulent 1960s. Ms. Hawn was an executive producer on this film, as well as other projects including the television movies “When Billie Beat Bobby” (2001) and “The Matthew Shepard Story” (2002). In 2003, she started Cosmic Entertainment with Mr. Russell and two of her three children, Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson. She became the first woman to receive the American Museum of the Moving Image Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. She has also won the 2004 Hollywood Film Festival Outstanding Achievement Award, the Women in Film Crystal Award, and the Tel Aviv 50th Anniversary of the State of Israel Arts Emissary Award. She has been a keynote speaker at the Washington Press Club and the Kennedy Center Distinguished Speakers Program. As a humanitarian, Ms. Hawn has been honored by the Harvard Medical School Mind/Body Institute, the Tibetan Children’s Village, Operation Smile, and Futures for Children. She was also presented with the Words Can Heal Foundation Ambassador of Healing Award. Of special concern to Ms. Hawn is her observation that our nation’s children are not developing to their full potential and is focusing her considerable energies on developing her Bright Light Foundation. Believing that our strengths come from within and that we are responsible for our own happiness, she has made it her personal mission to reach out to our children and change the world one mind at a time. Throughout her career, Ms. Hawn has remained a remarkable person filled with an unparalleled warmth, generosity, humor, intelligence, wit, and joy. Loyola Marymount University is proud to bestow on Goldie Hawn the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa. 10 Joseph G. Jabbra, Ph.D. Joseph G. Jabbra was born in Lebanon. He received his Licence in Law and a masters in political science at the Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut in 1965, and in 1970, he earned his Ph.D. in political science from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. A specialist on the Middle East and international law, Dr. Jabbra first taught at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1971. Nine years later, he became Academic and Research Vice President, Saint Mary’s second ranking officer, a position he held for ten years. He won the University’s Honorary Gold “M”—the highest award granted by the Students’ Association to a non-student for significant contributions to Saint Mary’s students. Dr. Jabbra joined LMU in 1990 as Academic Vice President and Professor of Political Science. It was clear during his tenure that he is an advocate for excellence and a lover of learning. He played a major role in augmenting academic standards in the growing student body; the freshman class grows yearly, and the University now offers an Ed.D. in Education. Moreover, Dr. Jabbra was instrumental in not only providing LMU faculty with greater research opportunities but also expanding the number of full-time faculty. The growth in university facilities—specifically, more classes and office space as well as state-of-the-art classroom technology—benefits both students and faculty. But arguably, Dr. Jabbra’s greatest legacy may be his recognition as a peacemaker and a builder of consensus who brings people together. On June 1 of this year, Dr. Jabbra will become President of the Lebanese American University in Beirut. There, he hopes to “play a leadership role on the international scene and make a contribution to peace through higher education.” The Lebanese American University, which was founded by Presbyterian missionaries in the mid-1800s to provide education for women, is co-educational and became a university in 1992. It appears that Dr. Jabbra has found another exciting academic environment, with its approximately 7,000 undergraduate and graduate students of the arts and sciences, business, engineering and architecture, and pharmacy. Dr. Jabbra is an active member of fifteen professional societies; the recipient of several grants and awards; and the author, co-author, editor, and/or coeditor of nine books, twenty-nine articles, twenty-six book reviews, and twentyeight papers given at national and international association meetings. He and his wife, Nancy, Professor and Director of Women’s Studies at LMU, have two children, Michael and Mary. Loyola Marymount University has benefited from Dr. Jabbra’s valuable presence as a committed academician, administrator, educator, and scholar, and we are proud to have had him with us. We wish him Godspeed in all his future endeavors. 11 Master of Ceremonies and Graduate Commencement Speaker Academic Mace The ceremonial academic mace was first used in 1385 at the University of Vienna, when two ancient instruments, the royal scepter and the battle mace, were combined to form a symbol of the power and authority vested in the institution. An academic mace is traditionally carried in procession and mounted on stage whenever degrees are granted or when the faculty is assembled in formal academic dress. Designs of academic maces vary among institutions but usually consist of a shaft topped with a large ornament depicting the symbols of that school’s traditions and history. The Loyola Marymount University mace has been carried prominently in commencement processions for over three decades and is rich with the history of Loyola and Marymount traditions. The mace was originally commissioned and designed in 1970 by Dr. Renée Harrangue while Academic Dean at Marymount College. Sister Regina Buchholz, S.C.R.H., a lecturer in the Marymount Department of Art, crafted the design into the mace used by Marymount College. Loyola University of Los Angeles, although rich with many Jesuit traditions, did not have a mace. In July of 1973, when the two schools merged, Donald P. Merrifield, S.J., President of Loyola Marymount University, requested that Dr. Harrangue modify the Marymount mace to reflect the true embodiment of the newly formed Loyola Marymount University. Two faces of the mace depict the University Seal, one uses the Papal Seal, and the fourth includes the American shield of stars and stripes. The resulting mace is carried today in the commencement procession. 12 University Seal The seal was created in 1973 by Dr. Renée Harrangue to represent the heritage of Loyola Marymount University in the traditional iconography of an academic emblem. The four fields of the shield represent the four entities whose traditions are upheld by the University. Top Center The radiating sun symbolizes the combined light of Loyola University and Marymount College coming together as one school. Upper Left Corner Society of Jesus: IHS monogram and a cross, encircled by an acanthus wreath, symbolizing victory. IHS is the ancient Greek abbreviation for the name of Jesus Christ. Upper Right Corner Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary: The Sacred Heart of Mary pierced by a sword, crowned with a cross and encircled by an olive wreath, symbolizing peace. Lower Left Corner Los Angeles Archdiocese: Three schematized angels, signifying the University’s location in the city founded in 1781 as El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles del Rio de Porciùncula— The town of our Lady, Queen of the Angels of the Porciùncula River. Lower Right Corner State of California: The grizzly bear looking toward the Lone Star, adapted from the original flag of the California Republic, first raised in 1846. Two mottoes encircle the shield Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, “To the greater glory of God,” was the exhortation of St. Ignatius of Loyola and is the motto of the Society of Jesus. Tua Luce Dirige, “Direct us by Your light,” is the motto of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary and is shared by all of its educational institutions in the United States. 13 Academic Regalia The traditional regalia as worn today are derived from the dress of European universities in medieval times, when only the clergy were permitted to attend or teach at academic institutions. The costumes that the Loyola Marymount University graduates and faculty wear at Commencement, now purely symbolic, once served practical functions. For instance, the mortarboard came into use in 1311 when the Synod of Bergamo adapted the pileus quadralus as the official headwear to be worn by scholars throughout their years of study. While the mortarboard has since become strictly a symbol of the graduation ceremony, the Church was actually addressing a more banal issue: ensuring that its clerics’ tonsured heads stayed warm in its cold stone buildings. The chaperon, or hood, was also likely adopted for this reason, although today’s graduates wear it hanging down the back like a monk’s cowl. It was once worn over a short cape called a tippet and had a tail called a liripipe, which was used to pull the hood over the head and wrapped around the throat to keep the hood in place. The liripipe was also used to receive alms. Today, chaperon, tippet, and liripipe are combined into one symbolic garment, whose colors are specific to major as listed at right. 14 As to the academic gown, it was modified from the ecclesiastic robes that the medieval clergy wore to class. The common practice was codified at Oxford in 1222 when the Archbishop of Canterbury mandated the wearing of the cappa clausa, a closed robe based, like the pileus quadralus, on a lay style. The tradition of a specifically academic robe spread to Paris, Bologna, and throughout Europe over the next centuries, although most universities in Germany and Switzerland did not adopt the practice. Today, individual European universities continue to establish their own academic costumes. Loyola Marymount University faculty who attended international institutions proudly wear their unique and colorful attire to our commencement ceremony. White African American Studies Art History Asian and Pacific Studies Chicana/o Studies Classical Civilizations Classics Counseling Psychology English European Studies French Greek History Humanities Latin Liberal Studies Marital and Family Therapy Pastoral Studies Philosophy Political Science Psychology Sociology Spanish Urban Studies The traditions of British academic regalia naturally carried over into most American institutions, but gradually gave way to the wearing of lay fashions in class. It was in the later part of the nineteenth century that students at Columbia, Bryn Mawr, and several other institutions sought to revive the European tradition, at least for use at commencement ceremonies. In 1895, a special intercollegiate commission standardized a specifically American style and form to commencement costumes. Subsequently, in 1932 and again in 1959, this code was revised and appropriate styles and colors prescribed to meet the needs of the burgeoning academic institutions of this country. But with only subtle differences, nearly all American students graduate in the same caps, hoods, and gowns. Copper Economics Scarlet Theology Drab Accounting Business Administration Brown Dance Studio Arts Theatre Arts Silver Communication Studies Bright Gold Applied Mathematics Biology Chemistry Computer Science Engineering & Production Manage Engineering Physics Environmental Science Mathematics Natural Science Physics Gold Biochemistry Styling of the robes varies slightly for the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, but a somber black is the American standard color. Hoods corresponding to individual majors also differ in length, trim, and shape. The hood lining designates the colors of the institution granting it, hence the Loyola Marymount hood is lined in crimson and blue. The color of the velvet border on the hood designates the major of the graduate’s degree, corresponding with the following scheme: Orange Civil Engineering Electrical Engineering Mechanical Engineering Crimson Animation Film Production Recording Arts Screenwriting Television Production Light Blue Education 15 Degree Candidates Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts Degree candidates are listed as of January 27, 2004, for the purposes of this program. The University further distinguishes between three levels of honors by specific grade point averages: cum laude (with honors) for 3.50 or higher, magna cum laude (with great honors) for 3.70 or higher, and summa cum laude (with highest honors) for 3.90 or higher. These specific honors are based on graduates’ actual final grade point averages and are printed on their diplomas. Those graduates listed under Honors Received have been awarded degrees prior to May 2004 and are now participating in the Commencement ceremony. They have already received their final grade point averages, and therefore, the honors listed for them reflect their actual diploma honors. The candidates for graduation listed under Honors Pending do not yet have a final cumulative grade point average as of the Commencement ceremony date, and the honors listed for them are based on their earlier coursework. The honors printed on their diplomas may differ from those noted here. Give me only your love and grace. That is enough for me. Take, Lord, receive all my liberty, my memory, understanding, and my entire will, all that I have and call my own. You have given it all to me. To you, Lord, I return it. 54 Prayer of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary God, Father of infinite love, We praise You! Help us to assume our commitment of fidelity to the mission of Christ in the Church of today as it leads the way in defense of the oppressed. Make us sensitive to the needs of your people. Mark us with the fidelity of Gailhac, our founder. May our presence be a constant revelation of love and joy As was Mary’s —Woman of faith and hope. Make us grow, Lord, in true zeal, capable of transforming the world. May our hearts discover You in the Scriptures, in the breaking of bread, and in the service of others. Strengthened and united in love, we want as individuals and as an Institute to be a testimony to the world that You are Father and that we are brothers and sisters in your Son, Jesus Christ, Amen. 55 embrace the challenge The University has adopted “Embrace the Challenge” as its guiding theme for the new millennium.
