KEYNOTE
Eric Arauz, MLER, is author of An American's Resurrection: My Pilgrimage from
Child Abuse and Mental Illness to Salvation, and is the President of the Trauma Institute of New Jersey www.traumanj.com. He is an internationally recognized theorist, speaker, systems consultant, trainer and national awardwinning author. Eric is a volunteer adjunct faculty instructor at the Rutgers
Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in the department of Psychiatry. He
consults on trauma-informed practice and recovery-based psychiatric treatment with many organizations. Eric has won fellowships and national awards
for his work. He was the co-creator and Vice Chairman of the Opiate Task
Force for the NJ Governors Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse and served
as a state officer appointed by Governor Christie. Eric also created and is now
executing the first statewide trauma training for New Jersey Department of
Children and Families called Taming Trauma based on the Adverse Childhood
Experiences Study (ACES) and the Polyvagal Theory, training all 6000 children
welfare workers.

Care Coordination for
New York’s Children, Youth and Families
Presenters: Michelle Wagner, Mental Health Program Specialist, Division of
Integrated Community Services for Children and Families, NYS Office of Mental
Health and TBA, Office of Health Insurance Programs, NYS Department of Health
Tailoring New York’s health home model for children and families has been a
careful and deliberate process by child and family stakeholders and state
agency representatives. State officials will share the most recent information
on children’s health homes, and how health homes are preparing to best
assist children and families to access behavioral health and physical health,
and community and family supports.

role does resiliency play in overall wellness and coping skills? How do we
insulate children, and should we? Does resiliency make a difference? If so,

Steps To Recovery
School Success for Students with
Mental Health Needs

This workshop will address the various issues that occur in schools when a
student has mental health needs, including CSE (Committee on Special Education) meetings, ED (Emotional Disability) diagnosis and stigma.

This workshop will investigate the “T” in LGBT and how gender identity differs
from sexual orientation. Myths and stereotypes about transgender people, the
negative effects of transphobia and bullying, and ways to create safer spaces for
transgender people will be discussed. Issues facing transgender people, risk
factors, supportive factors, and best practices will also be covered.

Reaching for Real Communication
with Your Child
Presenter: Joshua Hendrickson, LMSW, PhD, Stony Brook
What is the real, deeper communication behind your child's words and
actions? This workshop will help you to see beyond the surface words and actions to understand what your child is really wanting and asking for, and to
understand how to speak to those needs so the two of you may reach an understanding that allows both to have their needs and wants be met.

Long Island Health
The team from LI Helps Recovery will discuss signs of drug use and methods
to spot addictive behavior, and the frequent comorbidity of mental health
disorders and substance abuse. To fight the stigma of being labeled an
"addict," the presenters will compare textbook advice to their real life
experiences. Get a better understanding of what can lead someone towards
substance abuse, and what can help them not only to seek recovery, but
maintain recovery.

The Transgender Experience
The Truth about Heroin & LI’s Epidemic
Presenter: Anthony Rizzuto, MSW, CASAC

This workshop will educate the audience on the disease of addiction. The presenter will cover withdrawal, tolerance, and the question of why, in spite of
negative consequences, does one continue to use a substance. The audience will
see addiction as an illness, as opposed to a moral failing. Time permitting the
presenter will also talk about stigma, co-dependency, and enabling behavior.

Rocks in the Backpack
Presenter: Risco Mention-Lewis
Suffolk County Deputy Police Commissioner
This workshop will help attendees uncover the hidden motivations behind actions
and the triggers that lead to children and adults throwing the Rocks in their
Backpacks at others, or having the rocks fall out and trip them up. Through 20
years of conversations and encounters with African American males, young and
old, Deputy Mention-Lewis has designed an effective CBT based strategy that
helps develop emotional intelligence, so people can move their lives forward by
turning the Rocks in the Backpack into the paving stones of a solid future.

Youth Guided Services

As we move towards growing the youth peer workforce, it is important
to discuss the best practice for hiring and supervising youth peers. Using
feedback from current Youth Peer Advocates around the state, we will
cover helpful methods of supervision and touch upon common oversights
seen statewide. We will also dive into the different levels of youth guided practice and methods to assure youth are being heard and their ideas
are being utilized.

Crime Victims Center & Parents for Megan’s Law
This workshop will provide information about the laws pertaining to
“sexting” and discuss the potentially devastating, long-term consequences. Participants will have a better understanding of the digital trail, and
what really happens when you send a picture or message or post on
social networking. Megan’s Law and agency services will also be
discussed.
