Letter Writing Tips
I.
Friendly Letters Should Be
Handwritten
A. Brief (a paragraph will do)
B. Simple and To the point
C. On a Notecard or Stationery
II. Be Specific In Your Thank
You Note
A. “Thank you very much for the fuzzy bunny
slippers you gave me for Christmas.”
B. “Thank you so much for the Halo 3 game for
my XBOX!”
C. UNLESS it’s a monetary gift. THEN:
“Thank you so much for your generous gift; I
really appreciate what you did.”
Not: “Thanks for the 50 bucks!”
III. Compliment the Gift &
Explain how you enjoyed or will enjoy it
• “The new XBOX game has such vivid
graphics; it really comes to life. I’ve been
playing it for hours and am sure it will be a
great way to unwind after a hard day at
school!”
• “The new sweater fits me perfectly and will
definitely keep me warm over these winter
months!”
• (Show versus Tell)
IV. Be Sincere, Not Flowery
• “The dinner you prepared was certainly
delicious, and it was so much fun having
all the family together.” (Sincere)
• “Grandma, your ham dinner made my
heart sing like choirs of angels.” (Flowery)
V. Mention Past, Allude to
Future
• “I had a great time with you over the
holidays and look forward to seeing you
soon!”
• “Thank you so much for coming to my
birthday party. I know we’ll enjoy many
more fun times ahead!”
• “It was great having you as my coach
this year; I will definitely be sure to visit
you often.”
