The ability to distinguish and count syllables in words
is important for phonological awareness. Repeatedly
counting syllables helps students learn to hear syllables
more automatically. In this activity, students count the
number of syllables they hear in the names for pictures.
The large format of these cards makes them perfect
to use in your directed teaching lessons. The cards are
color-coded by number of syllables for easy management.
Teaching with the Syllable Photo Cards
1. Begin with the orange 2-syllable cards. Show each
card and ask students to name the photograph.
2. After you are finished, ask them what is the same
about the words for each of these photos.
3. Then explain to students what a syllable is: A syllable
is a part of a word that contains one vowel sound.
Show students by clapping for each syllable or by
resting your hand underneath your chin to feel your
jaw drop as each syllable is spoken.
4. Show them one of the 2-syllable cards and say its
name. Model for them by clapping or resting your hand
underneath your chin to count the number of syllables
in a word.
5. In this same manner hold up each Syllable Photo Card
and proceed by having students clap or hold a hand
under the chin.
6. After you finish the 2-syllable cards, do the same
with the 3- and 4-syllable cards. Once students are
comfortable recognizing and counting syllables, mix
the cards together for an additional challenge.
Variation:
1. Place the three Syllable Category Cards in a row on a
table, a large pocket chart, or the floor.
2. Have students take one card at a time, determine the
number of syllables, and place it under the appropriate
Syllable Category Card.
Learning Center Activity:
1. At a learning center, have students repeat the
Syllable Sorting Lesson described above. After they
finish the sort, have them fill in the Syllable Photo
Card Reproducible, writing each word under the
correct category.
2. After the students finish writing words, they must
divide each word into syllables by using a slash
mark (/).
