TRANSITION PROJECT 2016
Welcome students. Hi, my name is Tumble and I live in the beautiful Paradise Ocean. My friends and I have
heard that you will be attending Goffs School in September and we have been in contact with your Director of
Learning, Miss McBride, as we are in desperate need of your help. We have heard that Goffs School is a place
full of wonderful and helpful people and so we are relying on you to help us out.
A few weeks ago, the horrid sharks of Shark Bay tricked us into believing that they were friendly and they
have now captured our Ocean leader- the beautiful Mina the Mermaid. Mina has been locked in a treasure
chest and we need your help to crack the codes to open the chest.
My friends and I need you to complete each subject task to the best of your ability, in order to solve the subject codes to unlock the treasure chest. We would also like to get to know all about you and your skills and
qualities, as we may need to depend on you again in the near future.
Please make sure that you complete all sections of this booklet and print them out. Please put your work into
a folder and hand to your Learning Manager on your first day at Goffs School in September to receive your
reward for completing this work and helping us out.
Thank you Goffs Students! We look forward to working with you!

ENGLISH
At Goffs we love to use our imagination and write descriptively.
What is descriptive writing?
Why is it important you write descriptively?
We use the acronym MAPSO to help make our writing engaging, exciting
and come alive. You will now need to find a dictionary definition for each
device and make up your own example.
Device
Definition
Example
Metaphor
Alliteration
Personification
Simile
Onomatopoeia
Appealing to the senses can also help make a piece of descriptive writing create a clear image in the reader’s mind.
E.g. I could taste the success as I won the race.
Sense
See
Touch
Taste
Smell
Hear
Write a sentence for each sense.
English Task 2
Mini Saga challenge: Using MAPSO features and the senses, write a descriptive piece about either
the best or worst day of your summer holiday. You must write exactly 159 words. Below are some
stretch devices and Wow words that you may wish to include.
Note: Punctuation does not count.
Stretch task- can you add any
of the following?
MAPSO
Sentence variation
Punctuation for effect… ! ?:
Connectives
Wow words
5 senses
Adverbs ly/ing
Formal language
WOW Words:
Perplexed – very con-
fused
Flabbergasted – very
shocked
Gallivanting – happily
