Silly Sentences
Making the Game: Prepare sets of SUBJECT strips and PREDICATE strips using the
templates on the following pages. Print the templates out on sturdy paper, using a different
color paper for each template. Cut out the SUBJECT strips and place them in a container
labeled: SUBJECT/#1. Cut out the PREDICATE strips and place them in a container labeled
PREDICATE/#2. You will also need large pieces of white drawing paper, crayons or colored
pencils, and glue sticks.
Directions for Young Learners:
1. Have your child choose one strip from container #1 and one strip from container #2.
2. Point to each word and read them to your child.
3. Help your child glue the strips next to each other at the bottom of the large white paper
to make a complete sentence.
4. Read the sentence to your child a second time.
5. Have your child draw a picture of the Silly Sentence. Can your child tell you about his/her
picture?
Directions for Early Readers:
1. Have your child choose one strip from container #1 and one strip from container #2.
2. Help your child read all of the words.
3. Help your child paste the two strips next to each other at the bottom of the large white
paper to make a sentence.
4. Have your child try to read the sentence again; offer any help needed.
5. Now your child can draw a picture of the Silly Sentence. Can they explain why the
sentence is funny?
Directions for Fluent Readers:
1. Choose one Subject strip and one Predicate strip from each container.
2. Read the sentence.
3. Paste the two strips in the correct order at the bottom of the large white paper to make a
complete sentence.
4. Illustrate the sentence. Tell: What is the SUBJECT? What is the PREDICATE? Why?
