Messages from the Headteacher
Dear Parent/Carers
Open Evening - On Wednesday evening Cardinal Newman welcomed prospective students and parents from primary
schools all over Coventry. The school site was buzzing with excitement as our young guests experienced a whole range of
exciting activities showcasing the many subjects studied at Cardinal Newman. I would like to thank our outstanding students
who spoke to parents on the evening: Year 7 students Amba McKenna, Aoife O’Toole, Jacob Alcorn and Angel Pregely and
Head Boy, Vishal Ratnajothy and Head Girl, Meghan Blaszczyszyn. Please see the write up from Vincent Darby from Sacred
Heart Catholic Primary School on page 2 of this newsletter.
St Augustine’s Parish Mass - The first Parish Mass of the school year takes place at St Augustine’s on Sunday 25
September at 10.30am. Mass will be led by the students and staff of Cardinal Newman and it would be wonderful to see all
our students from the Parish there.
St Elizabeth’s Triple Celebration - There will be a triple celebration mass at 3pm on Sunday 25 September . The mass is
to celebrate 50 years of Good Shepherd School and 100 years of St Elizabeth’s School and Parish and will be led by
Archbishop Bernard Longley.
Student Safety - A reminder to parents and students that for safety reasons students walking to/from school must enter
and exit the school site either by the Cinder Path entrance or the Tamworth Rd entrance. Students are not allowed to
walk on/ off the school site through the vehicle gates on Sandpits Lane. Parents who are dropping off or picking
up students must ensure that it is done safely.
Uniform - Thank you to all the parents who have supported us in helping to ensure that our uniform is of an excellent
standard. A reminder that ties, jumpers and blazers must be worn at all times during the winter and spring terms. Outdoor
coats need to be plain black or navy. Denim or leather jackets/coats, tracksuit tops and hooded tops are not permitted.
I hope you have a good weekend, Mrs Marina Kelly, Headteacher
Year 7 ‘Settling In’ Evening
On Thursday 6th October 6.00-8.00pm, there is an opportunity for parents of students in Year 7 to meet their son/daughter’s tutor and find
out how they have settled into school so far. There will also be workshops running during the evening for you to attend which will give
advice on how best to support your child. Important information about your child's curriculum will also be shared that evening. Letters and
appointment times will be sent home early next week. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Year 10 Football
Newman vs President Kennedy
It was a comfortable win for the Year 10 football team in their first game of the
season. Newman dominated the first half with their attacking football and ended
the half 3-0 up with goals from Daniel Lafferty and two from Jonathan Ngandu.
The second half continued well with Jolan Rodrigues making it 4-0. President
Kennedy pulled a goal back from the penalty spot before Marcus Hill rounded off
the scoring which saw Newman as comfortable 5-1 winners.
Man of the Match: Adrian Mogilan

Weekly Prayer
Lord God, you are the source of all friendship. Help us to be good friends to each other; help us to offer
friendship when we can to those who are lonely and in need. Amen
Open Evening 2016
I really enjoyed visiting Cardinal Newman. It is a really big school and very different to my primary school which is
Sacred Heart. It was very nice to hear the Head Boy and the Head Girl talk about how they had enjoyed their time at
school and what they were going to do when they left. It made me think of what I wanted to do. I liked hearing the Year
7 students talk about their first 2 weeks and it made me feel better about moving up to the big school. I feel very confident now about making friends
even if I'm the only one from Sacred Heart.
I liked the school site as it is really huge and there seems like there is lots of space. I visited lots of the blocks and the library which were all great.
The gym activity was really good and I also really liked having a ukulele lesson. The technology activities were good as we don't have anything like that
at primary school. The children and the teachers were all very friendly and happy and I felt like it was definitely the right school for me to come to.

Proposal for a new Peace Orchard
To parents & supporters of Cardinal Newman Catholic School
As part of Cardinal Newman’s status as a national Beacon School of Peace, a new apple orchard of
300 trees is planned on 3.7 acres of land at Coundon Hall Park. The site is between the playing
fields on Tamworth Road and Coundon Wood on Long Lane and will be easily accessible from the
car park off the Tamworth Road. The project is a partnership between Cardinal Newman,
Normandy Day UK and Coventry City Council, who have offered the site and will help maintain it.
The orchard will commemorate soldiers who fell among the apple orchards of Normandy during
the Battle of Normandy between June and August 1944 and is the brainchild of 93 year-old
decorated Coventry Normandy veteran, Dennis Davison. Accompanied by on-site and digital
information, the orchard will be a practical and enjoyable way of learning about the significance of
these historical events, Coventry’s role as the City of Peace and Reconciliation and how to make
cider and apple pies!
Before the project can start, we need to secure grant money. To secure the money we need you
to tell us what interests you about this project so that it can be designed and managed to suit you
and the aims of the school.

Shoe Box Appeal 2016
Last year we had a very successful Shoe Box Appeal with winning tutor groups collecting 16 and the school
overall collecting 188 boxes. This year we would love to beat it! The Shoe Box Appeal sends shoe boxes filled
with gifts to children in countries who have suffered extreme poverty or war. This could be the only gift they
get in their lives.
This year we want to make it bigger and better. Our aim is for each tutor group to produce a minimum of 4
shoe boxes; preferably for teenage girls and boys. This age group receive the lowest number of shoe boxes and yet there are so many teenagers who
need them. You are welcome to give additional boxes.
Students are asked to bring in items to fill these wonderful shoes boxes. The most important items are:
Toothbrush and toothpaste
Soap
Sponge or flannel
Comb or brush
Exercise books and pens or pencils
It is important the items that fill the shoe boxes are NEW as these are a GIFT. Only hats, gloves and socks can be given as clothes items. Please
note that war games/toy soldiers/guns and liquids are not able to go in these boxes.
Further information can be found at: https://www.samaritans-purse.org.uk/what-we-do/operation-christmas-child/
All boxes need to be filled and decorated by Monday 7 November 2016.
Please start collecting items for your shoe boxes now. Thank you for your support for this wonderful cause.

Poem of the Week: Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen:
Taken from the GCSE WJEC Eduqas Poetry Anthology
Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.
Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!—An ecstasy of fumbling
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime.—
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
Attendance Focus
Week
Next week your child will be
undertaking an attendance focus week to look at the
importance of good attendance and how this links to
attainment. Any child who maintains 100% attendance for
this half term will be invited to a special afternoon lunch
with their HOY to say well done for this fantastic
achievement.
If your child’s attendance is below the required 96% then
we will be undertaking some small targeted workshops to
establish the problems preventing this. These will happen
with key staff in school,
If you have any questions about these workshops, or
attendance focus week then please speak to your child’s
Head of Year in the first instance.
In all my dreams before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.
If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,—
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.

Aspire Value of the Fortnight is Integrity
Integrity is one of the most important life skills we can have because it is composed of many other
powerful life skills — patience, honesty, responsibility, dependability, accountability, and caring.
Over the next two weeks find as many opportunities that you can to show these qualities.
"Have the courage to say no. Have the courage to face the truth. Do the right thing because it is
right. These are the magic keys to living your life with integrity." W. Clement Stone
