College Magazine | Winter 2003
Did you know…
Considering the average length of tenure
among Augustana’s seven presidents is
20.4 years, it’s ironic the shortest term—
three years—was served by its founder,
Lars Paul Esbjörn (pictured at left). With
28 years, Thomas Tredway (p. 22) will
retire as second-longest serving president,
behind whom? [Gustav Andreen, who led
the College from 1901 to 1935]
The Fryxell Geology Museum is the
showcase for the second largest natural
history collection in Illinois, behind
Chicago’s Field Museum. When was it
started? [answer on page 17]
Many of Augustana’s varsity athletic
programs (p. 8) got their start as campus
clubs. What sports are represented in the
clubs available to students today? [crew,
fencing, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, rugby
and volleyball (men’s)—with a water
polo club in the works]
