Tacoma Science Café: Leeches, Logs and Landslides: 10 Years of Research on Spirit Lake
Tuesday, November 10 | 6:30 p.m. | The Swiss Restaurant & Pub (1904 Jefferson Ave., Tacoma)
Dr. Jim Gawel, University of Washington, Tacoma
The 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens drastically changed Spirit Lake, filling the old
lake basin with landslide debris and floating logs. People often ask if the lake has
“recovered,” but this is a brand new lake now. The deposition of volcanic material and
debris has changed the ecology of Spirit Lake and its surroundings creating a complex
ecosystem that researchers from the University of Washington, Tacoma have been
working for 10 years to understand. Delve into the extensive research with Dr. Jim Gawel
as he reveals what we know about the new lake today.
Eastside Science Café: The Magnetospheres of Solar System Planets and Beyond
Tuesday, November 17 | 7 p.m. | Wilde Rover Irish Pub, 111 Central Way, Kirkland
Matt Tilley, University of Washington Astrobiology Program and the Departments of
Earth & Space Sciences.
The Earth has a strong magnetic field that shields us from deadly solar radiation. What about
other planets? How can planetary magnetic fields be used to explore things light years away?
Join Matt Tilley, Ph.D. student from UW as he discusses these topics and more.
November’s Science Café series were made possible in part by a grant from the NASA Astrobiology Institute to the
