Thesis
Identity, Social Categorization & Socio-Economic Consequences; Virtual Identities in
the Case of the Iranian Green Movement. (Graded 1.3 - A)
This study has been seeking to present a critical perspective on a game-theoretic model
in which identity has been incorporated as a quantitative variable in an abstract function
of economic utility. In this study, a review of the notion of identity as conceptualized in
psychology and social sciences has been supplemented by theories of social networks
and social movements. This review has been contrasted to the dichotomous
quantification of collective identities in a game-theoretic model of utility maximization
proposed by Akerlof & Kranton (2000) in order to demonstrate the contingency and
socio-economic consequences of emergent identities. Furthermore, a dataset of virtual
interactions with Mir Hossein Mousavi’s page on Facebook in 2009 has been analyzed
as a case in context of the Iranian Green Movement, in order to provide real-world
evidence the phenomenon of emergent collective identities and its consequences.
