Going Solo!
This year’s solo canoe was built in the spring of 2014 by
award winning builder/designer Hilary Russell of Berkshire
Boat Building School in Sheffield. He says of her, “I built
this boat to be sturdy and comfortable. Red elm, a tough
hardwood with an interlocking grain, lends strength in
key places. The foam backrest and seat add comfort for
longer paddles. The eight-sided pine stringers, both beefy
and flexible, complement the doubled red osier dogwood
ribs, as does the waxed hemp lashing.” The “skin” on this
beauty is eight-ounce polyester. She is just 11 feet, eight
inches long, with a beam at 28 inches and weighs only 21
pounds and has a 250-pound carrying capacity. It is similar
in design to Mr. Russell’s own boat which won first place
at the 2012 Wooden Boat festival at Mystic Seaport. She’s
another beauty, isn’t she? Included is a handcrafted, 8’4”
double paddle.

ask for? Well, according to our experts and donors at the
Kent Greenhouse & Gardens, this tree also boasts disease
resistance, provides food for wildlife (and humans in a
pinch), lives in sun or partial shade, is deer resistant and
easy to care for, and is ... just simply ... beautiful. It’s fourinch, dark green leaves appear in spring, and in late spring
the real show begins. Pointed bracts of four-petaled white
flowers appear, giving this tree a unique show-stopping
appearance. In summer, round red berries begin to appear
that will be ready for harvest in the fall. Sweet and juicy,
these berries are a favorite for wine makers, and can also
be eaten straight off the tree! Kent Greenhouse & Gardens,
widely known for their high quality plants and installation,
will deliver and plant your Chinese Dogwood within a

Bordeaux!
Do you love wine? Do you love being immersed in the
heart of one of the world’s most acclaimed wine regions?
Then this 1850’s Gironde-style stone home in France’s
Bordeaux countryside is perfect for you! Enjoy a weeklong
stay (six nights) in this three bedroom, two bath house
situated near Saint-Émilion in southwest France. From
your garden table, gaze upon sunny hillsides and vineyards
which provide the picture perfect complement to your
strolling, biking and sipping pleasure. The owners tell us
that renting bicycles is a popular way to get around.
Nearby Saint-Émilion has a history dating back to
prehistoric times. The village is a UNESCO World Heritage
Site, and it is filled with fascinating Romanesque churches
and ruins stretching all along steep and narrow streets.
While the Romans may have planted the first vineyards in
the region as early as the 2nd century, the town was named
after the monk Émilion, a travelling confessor who settled
there in the 8th century. It was the monks who followed
him that launched the wine production of the region.

Bourbon – BraeVal Style!
What Scotch is to Scotland, bourbon is to the U.S.A. Our
only true native spirit, most folks think of it as Southern
sippin’. Until now, that is! Bourbon has been going
through a bit of a renaissance lately, with sales of smallbatch and single barrel bourbons exploding. And now
Litchfield County has its own distillery. BraeVal Distillery
produces world class bourbon based on a unique aging
technique developed 120 years ago by founder Gregor
McClusky’s ancestors. BraeVal is ready for the public and
you are invited to the distillery for a tour and tasting. Since
Bourbon is best sampled with some good food, your tasting
-17-
includes either a catered meal at the distillery or at a nearby
restaurant. This invitation is for a party of 12 and should be
scheduled for May of 2015 or later. Ladies and gentlemen,
prep your palates and start sippin’! Donated by Jack and
Pam Baker.

A Pip of a Package!
Your own private orchard! Montgomery Gardens in Warren
will help you start or add to yours by donating three
heirloom cider orchard trees in honor of a longstanding
Connecticut tradition of pressing farmhouse cider. Most
farmsteads included large orchards capable of producing
fruit for overwintering and up to 50 gallons of cider from
50 bushels of apples per family member. Drinking cider
was considered a healthier and safer alternative to drinking
from local water sources. Untended survivor heirloom cider
trees can be seen on historic Housatonic Valley private
properties today.
Montgomery Gardens will plant three two-year-old
bareroot trees that will root and begin to branch out the
first year. They should be producing fruit at three to four
years old. These particular heirloom selections were chosen
based on rootstock, flavor and versatility. They will provide
you with fruit for pies, jellies, and juices for at least seven
combinations of cider from sweet to tart. And, with the
bloom, this trio will be a beautiful landscaping accent….an
edible wildlife sanctuary.

The Well-Seasoned Traveler!
Join travel expert Nancy Novogrod at one of her favorite
restaurants in the Litchfield Hills or New York City — your
choice — to talk about your dream vacation! For 21 years
until this September, Nancy served as Editor-in-Chief of
Travel + Leisure, the renowned magazine of choice for
globe trotters and would-be travelers everywhere. She
knows how to ferret out the best experiences in the world,
whether at a remote wilderness lodge or a 5-star hotel in a
European capital, and is eager to help you plan a trip that
you will never forget. As Nancy says, “Inspiring people to
travel — and arming them with the best advice they can
possibly have — is what I love. When I arrived at T+L in
1993, travel to China, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Brazil
was considered somewhat pioneering. There wasn’t much
talk about sustainability, social responsibility, or even
authenticity. Now, travel has more to do with exploration,
experience, and building priceless memories.” To that
end, Nancy invites you and a friend to join her for lunch,
where she promises to share her travel experiences and
perspectives with you, and give you the insiders scoop—as
well as some great travel gifts she’s collected through the
years. This is your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the
expert assistance you need to plan your next adventure of a
lifetime.

Your Turn Under the Tuscan Sun!
Imagine the six of you dining al fresco under that ancient
Italian sun! You’ll sip local wines in the private garden of
Casa Bacco, a charming three bedroom home in Cortona,
a 3,000-year-old Etruscan hill town made famous in the
film Under the Tuscan Sun. Casa Bacco is a spacious and
luminous three-bedroom/two-full bathroom home spread
out over two floors. The bedrooms all have queen size beds.
The house has been in one family for many generations and
is decorated throughout with many family heirlooms and
interesting antiques. Each room has a distinct flavor of its
own: two of the bedrooms offer stunning views over the
rooftops of Cortona and down the bucolic Val de Chiana
(Chiana Valley) below. The other bedroom looks out over
the courtyard garden and neighboring homes.
Your host Miro has restored this gracious family home with
all the amenities and comforts needed. There is TV, free
internet, washing machine and a dishwasher in the fully
equipped traditional kitchen. Miro lives nearby and always
greets his guests and offers guidance for local explorations.
And a concierge service is part of this package to ensure a
unique experience not normally available to tourists. They
can line up fantastic adventures and activities, including
personalized cooking classes and wine tours. You’ll
be singing arias in the kitchen before we’re done with
you. Convenient to the main rail line and the Autostrada
between Rose and Florence. Please note: Cortona is an
ancient, walled hill town with many stairs, steep streets
and limited driving/parking with no elevators or handicap
accommodations.

Heavy Metal Thunder!
The purity and wonder of this amazing metal … stainless
steel. We take it for granted in our everyday world, but New
Milford sculptor W. David Herman sees the possibilities –
and captures them in this wonderful wall hanging “Heavy
Metal Thunder.” On working with this medium, the artist
says, “It develops its own pulse, being bent and molded and
cut and welded in an ever increasing orchestra of shapes,
all striving for that unwavering, longing phrase of delight.”
He likens the process to Antonio Salieri’s description of a
Mozart composition in Amadeus … “the beginning simple
… almost comic … just a pulse … like a rusty squeezebox
… and then, suddenly high above it … an oboe, a single
note hanging there, unwavering … until a clarinet took it
over … sweetening it into a phrase of such delight.” Enjoy
this unique and enchanting wall sculpture inspired by rock
band Led Zeppelin’s legendary drummer John Bonham,
and titled after a line in Steppenwolf’s song “Born To Be
Wild.” Measuring 40" x 33" x 19", the piece is donated by
the artist.

Either way, she will delight you as she shares the ins and
outs of filming a scene, offers you a snack and sets you up

close and personal some of the folks who signed this “The

Luncheon Lecture!
Oh, the tales he can tell over lunch at Manhattan’s hot spot,
The Monkey Bar. Alex Shoumatoff, one of America’s most
prominent literary journalists, invites two of you to meet
him at the Monkey Bar for lunch and conversation. Mr.

the pages of Vanity Fair with a l986 piece about the murder
of Dian Fossey that inspired the movie, “Gorillas in the
Mist.” According to the New York Times, Mr. Shoumatoff
is “consistently the farthest-flung of the New Yorker’s
far-flung correspondents.” Caroline Graham says that he’s
“a journalist who can change policy” and Graydon Carter
calls him “one of our great storytellers.” In 2001 Mr.

big First Night with his best friend, a television star, his

fledgling producer, his erratic leading lady, his wunderkind
director, an infamous drama critic, and a wide-eyed coat
check attendant on his first night in Manhattan. There’s no
business like show business. And, Christine Baranski, who
knows a thing or two about show business, will arrange
for the tickets and had the entire cast and the playwright
autograph her Playbill for you.

Li’l Zip Kayak!
Boat builder/designer Hilary Russell creates magic with
(mostly) natural materials in Sheffield. He created the
Zip for the paddler who plans to do some portaging and
wants to load and unload their gear quickly and easily. She
measures 11’ 10” with a 25” beam and only weighs 27
pounds! She features gunwales of spruce, a keel stringer
and rubrails of mahogany, ribs of norther white cedar,
and stringers and floor boards of white pine. The footrests
are adjustable for a paddler up to about 5’ 10”. The nylon
deck skin shrinks in sunlight and stretches in damp or wet
weather; so when not loading or unloading, always keep the
zippers closed. Mr. Russell considers this Zip a prototype.
We think he’s onto something!

13 Days to Glory: The Siege of the Alamo by Lon Tinkle
recreates a time when Texans were strongly divided in

Between 1846 and 1855 hundreds of thousands of Irish and
English emigrants came to America. They came because

a better life awaited them in the New World. Passage to
America is the story of these emigrants as told from the
eastern side of the Atlantic.

copying, her beloved natural world and uses transparent glass
paints on paper. For the past few years Nina’s fascination with

with the most transparent medium of all: glass. This approach
produces the luminous glowing colors of stained glass coupled
