Lincoln!Heights.!!She!is!truly!a!real!gem.!! ! John Henry Colwill (Bobbie’s father) met William Swanson who owned a lot of land in West Auckland and recommended he buy land out here as well. They became good friends and John married his daughter. John purchased approximately 3000 acres of land. He planted a pear orchard, bought cows and pigs as well as Clydesdale horses. He bought a barge, built a jetty and sailed to the fish market in the city to collect fish heads which he used as fertilizer on his land. Apple orchards were planted on either side of what is now known as Triangle Road, in those days it became known as Johnnie’s hill. John’s first marriage didn’t last- he later married Bobbie’s mother and Lincoln Heights Playgroup is now open for children 3 months to 4 years. John Henry Colwill died in 1942, the farm was sold, the cottage on the hill % moved into a farm cottage that was at the top of Lincoln Park Drive- the farm and orchards were known as Lincoln Park Estate (at that time the road was the drive to the house). Around the house John planted many unusual plants including some imported from overseas. The only ones left are the big oak trees that are in the reserve behind the Mormon church these were planted as acorns. Moire’s mother persuaded her father to build a tea room on the triangle land at the top of Johnnie’s hill and she would make and sell Devonshire teas. Her father also sold windfall apples there was there for a long time, but then that too was sold. The oak trees and pony paddock are still there for all to enjoy. “I was very fortunate to have such a lovely place to grow up in and part of me will always be out west. Ron is carrying on the tradition on his property - the last part of the Lincoln Park Estate in Massey. A lot of the roads were named by Dad; Colwill Road, Moire Road (after me), Royal Road (was named after a Royal Typewriter that he imported from Germany I think), Waimumu Road (after his boat), and Lincoln Ave of course was the drive up to our home”. 2 1 WHAT’S COMING UP Whole school assemblies are held fortnightly on odd calendar weeks at 2pm, usually underneath the shade structure, weather permitting.
