CCF Continues to Grow
by Kelly Grinsteinner, Chisholm Tribune Press/Hibbing Daily Tribune
The Chisholm Community Foundation’s (CCF) “family of funds” just got a bit bigger.
Longtime Chisholm resident, Paul Marturano, started the Marturano Family Fund earlier
this month. Why is that noteworthy you ask? Because he’s hoping to start a trend. “We
want to encourage others to do the same thing”, said Marturano, who is also a CCF board
member. “We believe there are families out there that could afford to establish their own
family fund, and we want to spur them on to give back to the community.”
A family fund is separate from the CCF’s general endowment fund. All of the funds under
the umbrella of the CCF—including the family funds—are known collectively as a “family
of funds’. “Family funds” are separate agreements made with an existing foundation, such
as the CCF or Minnesota Community Foundation, and are created for the purposes and
goals of the donor(s). These funds are often dedicated to a specific passion or affection,
such as the CCF’s Chisholm Public School Foundation, or as an opportunity to honor or
memorialize a family, friend or special interest, such as CCF’s Veterans’ Memorial Association.
The Marturano Family Fund is a donor-advised fund, which means the Marturano Family
manages the fund. Donors define the fund name, its purpose, distribution and advisors.
Advisors, most often the family members, make recommendations to the CCF board on
how to allocate the monies. However, the CCF board has the final say.
There are also a few parameters for grants, such as the monies must go toward school, education, the city or to a non-profit with 501c3 status. A designated fund starts with a minimum of $25,000. A donor-advised fund starts with a minimum of $10,000.
With a deep appreciation and level of concern for the community, Marturano said the impetus to start his family fund was simply to give back. “I appreciate a small town, and appreciate that my five kids and grandkids were educated in our schools,” he said, noting that
over the years he was involved with various city boards, commissions, veterans groups and
service organizations. “I’ve long been involved and firmly believe that when you live in a
city, you become part of that city and the city becomes part of you. Getting involved is just
how I am.”
Marturano said he looks forward to granting monies to various entities, causes and functions. “It’s going to be interesting,” he said, adding he has his likes such as the Iron Man
Statue and the Longyear Lake Walkway. “Those things are important to Chisholm, and I
feel that they don’t always get the support and attention they need from the city. Now I’ll
be able to donate and help out, get some things done that need to be taken care of.”
Spurred by a conversation between members from the community of Chisholm and graduates returning to their hometown about how Chisholm needed more opportunities to enhance the lives of those living in Chisholm and ideas to draw businesses, families and other
opportunities to the Iron Range community, the CCF was established in 1987. Graduates,
interested individuals and businesses came together and collaborated with the expertise of
the Minnesota Community Foundation.

charity is equal to the fair market
value of the donated property.
Greetings Fellow Investors!
“...together we can do so much.”
This is the last “Chairman of the Board Report” I will
be writing, as my term as a board member will end in
July.
Serving as the Chair of the CCF Board the past two
years has been an honor and a learning experience. I
would like to thank you, our investors, and the CCF
board for all the support. I leave knowing that we, as
a board, made a difference and helped the Foundation, community and school grow.
The Foundation will be put into very competent
hands as our Vice Chair, Glenn Jackola, will become
the Chairman. Shaun McCabe-Briski will take over
as Vice Chair and Tom Pascuzzi will assume the Secretary/Treasurer responsibilities.
A Word About the Advantages of Making Stock
Contributions
If you are thinking about making a relatively substantial contribution to the CCF or any other charity, you
might consider donating appreciated stock instead of
cash. The way this can be a win-win situation for
you and for our foundation is based on the general
rule that the deduction for a donation of property to a
In the case where the donated
property is “gain” property, the
donor does not have to recognize
the gain on donated property.
These rules allow for a “doubling
of tax benefits”: a charitable deduction, plus avoiding tax on the
appreciation in value of donated
property.
This technique may work for contributions from
$100 to $1 million, depending on your individual tax
situation. Significant gains in equity markets have
made the above scenario attractive to many of our
supporters. If you are interested in finding out more
about this process, please call the CCF office at 218254-1101.
Thank you for allowing me to serve as the Foundation Chair and thank you for your continued support!

A Word About Records!
By Shannon Zubich
WOW! Do you think it’s over? As I write this article, the sun is high in the bright blue sky, the snow is melting and I
really, really hope spring is here! But I have lived here long enough to know that Mother Nature may still send us cold
and snowy weather. It has been a winter of records, including living with the most days below zero in a season, the accumulation of snow and last but not least—the season to watch our own, Coach Bob McDonald, surpass the 1,000 mark
in the state of Minnesota for games won during his 59 years of coaching! He spent 53 seasons as a Chisholm Bluestreak.
He also coached in McGregor and Barnum.
The community was abuzz with the activity surrounding Coach McDonald’s 1,000 wins. It came during a game that was
held over the winter break. He currently is Minnesota’s all-time wins leader. If you are an alumni of Chisholm, I am
sure you remember Coach McDonald from either the basketball court or the classroom. Coach McDonald is known to
be very verbose. He also prides himself on his extensive vocabulary that translates into a juicy story or two. As a student, I saw Mr. McDonald in a totally different light than I have for the past 30 years as a coworker. Back in the day, I
would never have believed how fun & witty he is. I don’t want you to get the wrong idea—Mr. McDonald has always
been a person with rules and regulations. That has not changed since I’ve know him. I also have been lucky enough to
serve along side him on the Chisholm Public School Foundation (CPSF) Board. It is with that knowledge that I thank
him for serving as President of this board for the past 10 years. Even when he has a full schedule, he always takes time
for the CPSF. I would be remiss in not mentioning his wife, Carol, who keeps him on track as well as serving as VicePresident of our board.
Coach McDonald has retired from his position as head basketball coach. Prior to that retirement, he was inducted into
the Minnesota State High School League Hall of Fame in May of 2013. On July 2, 2014, he will be inducted into the
National High School Hall of Fame which takes place in Boston. During his career, Coach McDonald led the
Bluestreaks to 11 state tournament appearances and three state titles. Congratulations on all of your great accomplishments, Coach! I know for sure that, even though he has retired, Mr. McDonald will never quit serving the children of
Chisholm.
As spring arrives, it’s time to submit applications for grant awards from the CPSF. It is with gratitude that I announce
that our fund has surpassed $100,000. All grants from this fund go directly to Chisholm students to help supplement
activities the school offers. Please consider becoming an investor in the Chisholm Public School Foundation. If you are
interested in making a donation, you can send it to the Chisholm Community Foundation at 4 S.W. Third Avenue, Chisholm, MN 55719.
If you have questions regarding the CPSF or are interested in becoming a board member, please call me, Shannon
(Cuffe) Zubich at 218-254-5726 x2904 or send me an e-mail at [email protected].
Thank you very much for investing in the school community!
