Broad, pyramidal, white flower spikes seem to cover entire tree in late Spring. Young trees have a light gray bark, turning to a rougher texture, somewhat scaly when older. Tolerates city conditions well. Many old specimen trees dot the older side of streets of Mansfield and Sandusky, Ohio. Summer appearance of these trees is outstanding. The State Tree of Ohio. Culture: Trees prefer a rich, deep fertile, well drained, loamy soil. pH 6.5 to 7.5. Sun or partial shade. Zone 3. SPECIAL NOTE: Leaves sometimes scorch in hot summer, dry winds during late July and August, and drop. This does not seriously injure them. They prefer partial shade, to prevent dehydration, with adequate moisture and humidity. They are native along our river valley here. Also they are grown from seed. They are usually branched well, but are not as uniform as traditional budded clonal hybrids of Maples, Flowering Crabapples, etc. 130130307691537- 02-03’ 03-04’ 04-05’ 05-06’ 06-07’ 07-08’ 08-10’ 1.50-2.00”PG 1.50-2.00” (#4-5 Container) (#4 Container) (#4-#5 Container) (#4, #5-#10 Container) (#5-#10 Container) (#5-#10 Container) (#5, #7, #10 Container) (#10 Container) (#10-#20 Container) 14.95 19.95 48.00 54.00 64.00 82.00 98.00 110.00 124.00 ******* ******* 44.00 49.00 59.00 74.00 89.00 99.00 110.00 Aesculus hippocastanum ‘Baumanni’, BAUMANNI HORSECHESTNUT (60') Double white flowers, 3/4" in diameter, appear in large spikes approximately 12 inches in overall size. Flowers develop on very young trees, even on 2-3 year old trees. Flower panicles are 4-8” long by 1.75-3” wide. Many smaller flowers about 1.5” long are composed compactly within each panicle. These trees flower dependably every year and flower panicles literally cover the entire tree in late April and May. Trees have withstood -40 degrees below zero and are very hardy and considered to be a Zone 4 selection. The Ohio State Scarlet Buckeye differs from the species, Aesculus pavia, in that we have found the species to be very variable in flower color. Some are buff colored and lighter in red and scarlet tones with only a few being deeper reddish colored. The seeds of this variety develop in late October into 1.5-2.5” diameter pods with 1 or 2 brownish seeds resembling the seeds of Ohio Buckeyes. Expect these trees to get 15’ tall in about 15-20 years. They grow best in full sun or partial shade. Leaves appear extra early in the spring but are one of the first to lose there leaves in Autumn. Plant them as a small ornamental tree or shrub. They can easily be staked and trimmed to grow into a tree form shape, although without trimming and shape they will retain a clump form with lower branches. This selection of Aesculus pavia by Van R. Wade was named in 2008. Three trees were donated to the Ohio State University and planted on the “Oval” in November of 2008. An additional tree was planted in the Chadwick Arboretum in May of 2008. Available in 2009 for the first time, as small, 2-3 year old trees. Trees are limited in available and are available at our Nursery only. 304040213755133311- 12-18” 18-24” 24-36” 36-48” 04-05’ Heavy 05-06’ Heavy 06-07’ Heavy 07-08’ Heavy 08-09’ Heavy 09-10’ Heavy 10-11’ 11-12’ (#2,3,4 Container) (#2,3,4 Container) (#2,3,4 Container) (#2,3,4 Container) (#10 Container) (#10 Container) (#10 Container) (#10 Container) (#10 Container) (#10 Container) (B&B&R&W) (B&B&R&W) 26.00 34.00 48.00 84.00 158.00 174.00 248.00 258.00 279.00 292.00 324.00 352.00 24.00 29.00 44.00 79.00 144.00 159.00 225.00 235.00 254.00 265.00 295.00 320,00 Aesculus x arnoldiana ‘Autumn Splendor’, AUTUMN SPLENDOR BUCKEYE (35') A small, oval to round-headed tree growing to 35’. It was observed for 20 years at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum before being named in 1980. Mature leaves are glossy green and resistant to leaf scorch. Leaves turn brilliant maroon-red in autumn in contrast to yellow-brown of other cold-hardy Aesculus. Flowers are yellow with an orange-red blotch on the upper claw and are borne in terminal panicles that reach 4” wide and almost 8” long. Flowers are followed by a yellow-brown, thickly husked fruit capsule containing one or two shiny brown seeds.
