Bassett - Gene joined the Navy in May 1945. He had no way of knowing that victory would be declared while he was in Boot Camp. This fact was very limiting to his Naval Career. Even though he wanted to be assigned to Submarines he was sent to various surface craft over a thirteen month period. It did allow him to travel around the Pacific and Asian Theatres however, places he would have never seen. The time period was uneventful except for almost getting hit by lightning in boot camp and nearly got washed over the side while standing watch during a Pacific Storm. He decided that this type of Navy Life was not what he wanted so he was discharged in 1946. He joined the Navy Reserves at SUBASE New London attending weekly meetings and serving two weeks during the summers. His highlight was when he was the first one in his group to receive his dolphins. He was declared a Submariner by the Captain when he opened the hatch while surfacing while the cold ocean poured in on him. He completed his Submarine Qualifications aboard USS ANGLER (SS 240) in 1955. He also served aboard USS TORSK (SS 423), USS BERGALL (SS 320), USS SEEKONK (AOG 20). Our first night ashore, most of the new qual guys were at the Acey-Ducey club and the senior qualified guys put a drink with about 10 different shots and my dolphins in front of me; dutifully I drank it and caught the dolphins in my teeth as instructed also as I was instructed by one of my “sea daddies “ I excused myself went to the head and puked up the booze so that I could get drunk at a more leisurely pace.
