THE ICEBERG ILLUSTRATES A PRINCIPLE OF OUR

‘…he learned obedience from what he suffered
and, once made perfect, he became the source of
eternal salvation for all who obey him.’ HEBREWS 5:9
Dear Friend,
The eucalyptus trees in the Australian rainforest grow up to 60 metres
(200 feet) high! To support that height, the root systems often go just
as deep and much wider. We don’t see the roots; we see the strength
and stability of the tree that the hidden root gives to it.
Like the roots in the rainforest, there are depths and widths under the
surfaces of our lives that no one sees, but which actually determine
what people do see. Each of us experience struggles and joys,
challenge and blessing, hardships and hope. Those experiences, often
hidden from others, mould our character for good or bad.
THE ICEBERG ILLUSTRATES
Jesus as a man was not exempt from things in this world that are
difficult. It was through experiences of suffering that Jesus learned
obedience. (Hebrews 5:9)
A PRINCIPLE OF OUR LIVES:
only one-tenth of an iceberg
is visible above the water. In
our life, the things people
see are only the tip of who
we are. There is a whole lot
more going on under the
surface of our lives.
We are in danger of not recognising the humanity of Jesus and thus
removing Him from the real world of struggles, temptations and
battles. The Scriptures tell us that Jesus ‘was despised and rejected
by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.’ (Isaiah 53:3)
He lived in a hostile environment, and in contrast with the usual
handsome appearance we give him, Jesus ‘had no beauty to attract us
to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.’ (Isaiah
53:2). We put a lot of value on being good looking, but that was not
of value to God. Jesus was evidently not good looking and did not

stand out in a crowd for his Hollywood looks. If he turned up in our churches one Sunday in his physical human
body, we would be aghast at the contrast with the stereotype we have imagined of him. What was beautiful about
Jesus was His character. He was kind, gentle and caring. He dared to talk to a woman everyone avoided. He
touched the lepers who were the untouchables of his day.
He was conceived out of wedlock and though we know the explanation for that, you can be sure the neighbours
didn’t! If Joseph had tried to explain Mary’s pregnancy, he would have been regarded with incredulity. He was
born in a stable with livestock, to parents who were poor and unassuming. He lived His first years as a refugee,
fleeing a hostile Herod and then grew up in Nazareth – a Gentile town with a poor reputation.
Jesus lived in the real world. He cried and mourned with those who experienced prejudice and pain. We don’t know
all the struggles and suffering of His youth, but we do know it was in His sufferings that He learned obedience.
And what is true of Jesus as a man will be true for us as human beings. God moulds us through circumstances
that are difficult, for it is there we learn obedience, character and sink deep roots. We learn more from our tears
than we learn from our laughter!

We don’t know all the details of His cries
and His tears and His suffering because
there is much in the life of Jesus that we
have no detail about. In fact if you took all
four gospels, which gives us the historical
record of His life; if you put all the events in
those four gospels together, we have about
one month’s worth of information.
Help us keep your information up-to-date.
