Y Runner: A Newsletter Year 2, Issue May 2016 Race results, upcoming events, profiles, tips, notes, and miscellaneous observations for runners, tri- and bi-athletes, and others of the Macomb, IL, area, especially those affiliated with the YMCA of McDonough County. *** Report from a Runner A Triptych by Jessica Moore My First Race Since I started running in 2014, I have completed over 100 races. My wall is full of medals and trophies and I recently had to move my race shirts to their own dresser. My husband actually started my little obsession with one race, the Race to Wrigley. This race is still one of my favorites to reflect on. The Race to Wrigley is a yearly event that takes place at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Runners start outside of the stadium, run around the neighborhood, and end by running through the concourse at Wrigley Field. When we arrived on that race morning, I remember telling my husband that we were in over our heads, and should have chosen a smaller race for our first 5K. There were a couple thousand participants, many of which were going to move faster than us. As we lined up at the starting line, I remember apprehension and nervousness as we looked around us at the growing crowd. I thought about how this must just be because it was my very first race and it Y Runner May 2016 would get better the more I ran (wrong, I feel that way still at every starting line). I was nervous for the first part of the race, as runners ran close together, working to shake themselves free of the crowd. At some point in every race, I find myself absorbed, and this one was no different. As we hit our stride and spread out, I looked around at the neighborhood, listened to people cheering, and enjoyed the feeling of being part of this. The very best part came at the end. Racing through the concourse was amazing, and running in a new and different place is great motivation to keep going. The only thing topping that was my family cheering at the finish line. The Big Race Many of the races I participate in are small town races. For a long time, I was adamant about remaining in small town races. One of my very best friends lives in Chicago, and runs frequently in races that are bigger than entire towns in this area. It wasn’t until I picked up my packet for the Bix 7 that I understood the appeal. When I grabbed my race packet and started towards the starting line, it was amazing to see the huge crowds of people milling around, finding their groups, and stretching out in preparation for the race. There were a few special things about this race that keeps it as one of my all time favorites. First, it was the fact that there were so many people around. There is something wonderful about being part of a wave of runners that takes over the streets of a city. What better way to spend a Saturday morning than with 20,000 of your closest friends? The other thing that made the Bix special for me was the elite runners, especially Meb Keflezighi. When I ran the Bix, his Boston Marathon gold medal was very recent, and everyone was talking about him. Because of him and the elite runners, there were two important parts of this race. First, was the “Beat the Elite” runner. This runner is chosen at random and given a head start. If the runner is able to finish before the elites, they are given a cash prize. When my group of runners saw this runner (it is an out and back course) the cheering was amazing. This runner had to be virtually flying listening to the cheers of complete strangers running in the other direction. The second part was watching the elites run far behind her. The level of cheering continued to rise, and it was continued motivation. What makes this race so great, as well as many others, is the camaraderie felt by a group of runners. Throughout the Bix, there are slip and slides, signs, and so many people out cheering the runners. The community supports the race, which makes it even more successful. 2 Y Runner May 2016 Dog Runs Every morning, I wake up early in order to work out before going to work. The biggest part of this workout is with my dogs, Grace and Baylor. Grace started running with me after we lost our other dog, Maggie. Grace was all by herself, I felt guilty, and tried to find more ways to spend time with her. When I saw the advertisement for the Doggie 5K in the Donna Phillips Run at WIU, a light bulb clicked on, and I knew I had found the perfect way to beat the doggie blues. Taking Grace to her first dog 5K was honestly the most fun I have had at a race. When we first walked in, the dogs were running around, greeting each other, and sniffing everything. Grace was no exception. She jumped on the registration table, pulled me around the room, and met every dog nearby, even if they were less inclined. The most fun was when we started the race. Grace wanted to pass the other dogs, running her quickest 5K pace, at a sub 9 minute mile. Once she had passed the other dogs, she continued her quick pace to the regular 5K runners, up and down the hills around WIU, and back into the gymnasium. I was happier taking that victory lap around the gym with her than I ever have been running a race on my own. She seemed to pick up the pace as she heard the cheers of the spectators and organizers. Our first place dog/owner certificate is framed and on the wall with my other running medals. We ran two more dog 5K’s that year, and each one was a blast. There is something about running with your best friend that makes running even better. *** Marathon Report Dana Bainter’s objective at the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon 4-3016 in Champaign was to qualify for next year’s Boston Marathon. Qualifying time in his age bracket was 3:40.00. He crossed the line at 3:39.10. A close call, but congratulations are in order, especially considering that the race weather was extremely bad. *** 3 Race Results Peoria Riverfront Museum Interplanetary 5F Peoria, IL 3-19-16 (Y members in bold) Nearly Naked Mile Western Illinois University Macomb, IL 2-27-16 Macomb Area Runners M1519 Owen Huff 20:01:77 2nd place F5559 Roberta Huff 29:35:40 2nd place * An untimed event in which 145 runners participated, some relatively unclothed. A chart is available at this site. You enter into the tool your best time at a particular distance without even entering the distance -- just the time. You also enter your age when you ran the time you entered. You click the submit button. Up comes a chart indicating your likely times at an array of ages. The tool was designed by a running economics professor who inputted lots of complex data to achieve an operational tool. Unfortunately the data he inputted was all male, thus technically the tool is geared to men runners. However he provides a numerical factor for converting the chart result to a result useful for women runners. The New York Times gave him some press April 16, 2016, but the article was aimed at older runners wondering why they had slowed down. It was the professor’s own declining times that provoked him to research the project. But the tool can be used by anyone – younger runners looking forward plus all runners curious about how fast they might have run had they taken up the sport earlier. *** Prepared by Deckle McLean with assistance from Cindy Cavett © Copyright YMCA of McDonough County 10
