IO’s embedded, real time OS guarantees solid,
reliable operation in low latency applications
with >500 ms ”end-to-end”. MPEG-4
H.264 PAL
AVC & NTSC
@ 2 Mbit/s
MAYAH’s new IO [io] series en/decoders
take MPEG-4 to the next level of picture
quality and line cost efficiency with full D1
PAL/NTSC resolution at 1–2 Mbit/s and with
progressively lower resolutions suitable
for PDA/mobile applications. The ISMA 2.0
compliant MPEG-4 stream is a ”universal
stream” covering broadcast, enterprise and
web casting applications.
mobiles, DVB-H receivers and set-top boxes.
And with full D1 at 720 x 576 / 480 for
PAL/NTSC at 25 / 30 fps, IO’s MPEG-4
output is challenging MPEG-2 but with
less than half the bit rate. This allows
huge savings to be made on line costs –
E1/T1, IP over satellite, ATM etc. – and a
return on investment in just weeks instead
of months or years.
Supporting MPEG-4 SP, ASP and AVC/
H.264, the IO [io] family covers the
requirements of broadcasting and cor
porate applications with DVB-H, DMB,
UMTS/3G, SNG, Reporting, Distribution,
In-house Streaming and ipTV.
Key features include:
Full interoperability thanks to ISMA 2.0
- Auto reboot after power down in 20 secs
-Corporate Communications/
LAN Streaming
ISMA compliant streams provide full
interoperability with QuickTime, Windows
Media, Real, VLC, and various PDAs,
- Auto reconnect after IP/Ethernet down,
-Journalist Previewing
- Full resolution D1 PAL/NTSC
- Low latency, 500 ms ”end-to-end“
- Encoder & Decoder “in one box”
- Decoder only version also available
The IO [io] 8000/8001 is now available as
Encoder/Decoder or Decoder only and is
equipped with an extensive range of
professional audio & video interfaces.
Applications for IO [io] en/decoders include:
-Unicast and multicast streaming
-Audio & Video over IP challenging
MPEG-2
Alongside the established digital SDI input
and output, IO [io] also offers component,
composite and S-Video interfaces, making
it a highly versatile broadcast solution.
-Mobile TV (DVB-H, DMB)
-ipTV
-SNG
-Outside Broadcasting
Although IO [io] supports SDI embedded
audio, there are also 4x AES/EBU, as well
as up to 8 analog audio IN/OUTs on DB25
connectors available. Two conventional
XLR jacks for analog stereo are also
provided. Any of the audio interfaces can
be operated in parallel with ”SDI video
only”, enabling IO [io] to use an existing
equipment infrastructure and avoiding the
need to invest in costly audio embedder/
de-embedder cards for monitoring etc.
-Remote Studio Links
-Back-Haul
-Talk-Back
-Confidence Monitoring
-Web Casting
- SAP (Session Announcement Protocol)
IO [io] 8000/8001 offers MPEG-4 SP/ASP
and AVC/H.264 encoding with automatic
scene change detection and HSS.
Drawing on MAYAH’s long experience in IP
based solutions it also supports QoS/ToS,
allowing a stream to receive the highest
priorization possible in a LAN/WAN or ”IP
over satellite” scenario. The extremely low
latency – in the range ≥500 ms ”end-toend” – makes it ideal for live situations.
Every IO [io] can also run as a decoder;
offering increased flexibility as well as a
saving on investment. When used in this
manner it has a permanent ”stand-by”
mode which starts decoding immediately
when a remote IO [io] 8000/8001 encoder
in e.g. an OB van starts streaming. In
addition, when encoder settings changes
are made the decoder will automatically
re-sync to the encoder. Using MAYAH’s
remote control software or Telnet/SNMP it
is therefore possible to control the units
from anywhere in the world.
The IO [io] 8000/8001 AD Pro is an ISMA
2.0 compliant system for streaming to
Mac/PC desktops and QuickTime, Real
Player, Windows Media Player, VLC or even
PDA’s & smart phones for viewing. In non
PC applications the stream can be viewed
by cost effective set-top boxes.
The ongoing convergence of broadcasting
applications demands flexible solutions.
MAYAH has implemented MPEG TS
(transport stream) support for trans
missions over IP, as well as over the
optional ASI interface – allowing IO [io] to
be easily integrated of into existing DVB
environments.

SNG – Satellite News Gathering
Transmission to the broadcasting center in high
audio and video quality using low cost links
Mobile TV – via DVB-H & DMB
With an IO [io] you’re already equipped for
tomorrows networks.
IO [io] is optimized for SNG over IP; whether Football Stadium or Crisis Region,
it offers end-to-end latency of just 500 ms.
The pilot projects for Mobile TV are completed and the results show great promise.
Regardless of which standard succeeds, the IO [io] series is ready for the challenge!

SNG – satellite news gathering
Camera
The key to SNG over IP are low bit rates
and low latency. The IO [io] 8000/8001
offers “end-to-end” latency starting at
just 500ms (plus satellite link) in tandem
with just half the bandwidth of MPEG-2.
In cooperation with our satellite technology partners NDSatcom, MAYAH is able
to offer SkyWAN, an IP based “meshed
satellite network” which allows journalists
to not just stream video in multicast mode
but also do research on the internet, use
VoIP and make file transfers all on the
same satellite link. The Diff.Serv (QoS)
mode enables a stream to be prioritized
STL – Studio Transmission Link
The IO [io] 8000/8001 is ideal for IP
based studio links. Especially having twoway send/receive capabilities in just one
box are being increasingly appreciated by
our customers. A pre-wired IO [io] can
switch from encode to decode or vice versa
at just the click of a mouse or button.
In situations where just send capabilities
are required – e.g. a local studio might
need to send a one-way stream to the
play-out center – multicasting on IP adds
many powerful new applications such as
previewing for journalists or the ability to
monitor via a PC from anywhere in a corporate LAN/WAN with software players e.g.
Windows MediaPlayer, QuickTime or VLC.
In receive only scenarios MAYAH offers the
IO [io] Decoder only models. For very high
quality links IO [io] can support bit rates
as high as 6-8 Mbit; especially useful for
SDI, embedded audio.

MAYAH successfully supports national DVB-H
Pilot Project
MAYAH has been involved in DVB-H
trials in Germany from a very early
stage in partnership with German Telco,
T-Systems. MAYAH also has a close working relationship with Rohde & Schwarz
regarding the integration of the IO [io]
8000/8001 H.264 video encoder with
the R&S DIP010 IP Encapsulator as well
as with manufacturers of “hand held”
mobile devices. And here the IO [io] has
demonstrated the very highest levels of
compatibility with DVB-H enabled mobile
phones from Nokia, Samsung, Motorola,
Sagem and others.
To accommodate the varying performance
of current hand held devices, ranging from
PDAs to mobile phones supporting DVB
and DMB, some adjustment is needed
at the encoder to ensure smooth motion.
The IO [io] 8000/8001 supports any
standard frame rate, including 12.5 fps
for mobileTV applications, as well as freely
adjustable custom frame rates.
The DMB Standard
For DMB (based on DAB) the IO[io] range
also supports MPEG-TS over IP and ASI
as well as FEC (forward error correction).
Developing DMB applications such as
“Visual Audio” demand high quality audio
using MPEG-4 HE AACv2 at extremely low
bit rates. The consumer can then receive
1 picture every 5 or 10 seconds displaying
e.g. the cover of the CD, a picture of the
artist or information on where to buy.
Set-top Box
IO [io] 8000/8001
Journalist Previewing
Especially for DVB-H, the IO [io] range
offers a MobileTV optimized H.264 codec
providing the highest quality at the lowest
possible bit rates using scene change
detection, as well as 3 different complexity modes to adjust for certain platforms.
The “look ahead” technology copes with
the challenge of transmitting the huge
data I-frames at the lowest possible bit
rates.
Corporate streaming & Web casting
Corporate streaming and broadband webcasting have essentially similar demands.
The IO [io] 8000/8001 can multicast over
IP, thus creating a stream for in-house
streaming as well as web casting (Darwin
Streaming Server) at the same time.
The key here is ISMA 2.0 compliant
streaming; allowing you to support
multiple software players on multiple
platforms and operating systems, as well
as hardware decoders (Set Top Boxes) with
just one generic stream.
Another useful application avoids having
to install expensive additional equipment
for journalist previewing. Using the same
ISMA 2.0 stream and its SAP (session
announcement protocol) functionality, any
journalist can simply choose a desired
program in the „playlist“ on his PC or
laptop and view this in real-time using a
software player.

Cup in Germany is one of the “big motors”
driving this new mobile TV technology.
And with DVB-H & DAB, the dream is
rapidly becoming reality.
