SALEM TURNS TIDE LATE TO WIN SERIES OPENER
STARTING OFF TRACK
Trevor Clifton dominated through the first five innings in
Thursday’s series opener at Salem, yielding just one hit.
However, the Red Sox scored three two-out runs in the sixth
to grab a 3-1 advantage. Clifton finished with three runs on
four hits in six innings, whiffing six without walking a batter.
The Pelicans scrated out a run in the top of the eighth to
draw to within 3-2, but Salem struck for five more two-out
runs in the bottom of the frame to take a commanding 8-2
advantage before rain swept in and halted the game with
two outs and a runner on third. After a 34-minute delay, the
contest was called and Salem vaulted back into first place
over Myrtle Beach.
In an 8-1 win over Potomac on July 1, Erick Leal fired five
shutout innings. That marked Myrtle Beach’s 13th start in
15 games in which their starter allowed fewer than three
earned runs, including their sixth without surrendering even
a single tally. During that 15-game stretch, Pelicans starters
collectively posted a 3.24 ERA (30 ER on 84 H in 83.1 IP).
However, since that point, the Birds’ starting staff has
struggled. Myrtle Beach has a grand total of eight quality
start in their last 25 games, with just eight pitchers making
it through the sixth inning. Over this span, Pelican starters
have posted a 5.17 ERA (71 ER in 123.2 IP). With 144 hits
yielded over that time frame, Myrtle’s lid-lifters are giving up
10.5 H/9.
UNBROKEN BATS
Myrtle Beach fell 8-2 Thursday, but the club has still scored
at least five runs in 18 of their last 22 games. During this
22-game stretch, the Birds are hitting .282/.384/.420, well
above their season line of .251/.336/.383, to score 147 runs
in this span (6.7 runs per game). In other words, the Pelicans’
season OPS is .719, a slightly above-average mark nearly the
equivalent of the Astros’ Marwin Gonzalez. But in these last
21 games, their .804 OPS ranks in line with what the Red
Sox’s Hanley Ramirez has posted this season.
WALKING THE WALK
One of the hallmarks of the Chicago Cubs’ organizational
philosophy is to control the strike zone both offensively and
defensively. The Pelicans have certainly demonstrated that
in 2016. Myrtle Beach has drawn 409 walks, the fifth-most of
any Minor League Baseball team. In addition, the Birds have
handed out just 293 free passes, which places them 29th
among full season minor league clubs. Pelicans pitchers have
walked three or fewer in 41 of their last 55 games, with their
hitters earning more free passes than their opponents in 38
of those contests.
FRIENDS CLOSE, ENEMIES CLOSER
The Pelicans have played a league-high 70 games decided
by three runs or less this season. Considering nearly every
team across baseball finishes at or near .500 in close games
throughout a season, it is surprising to see that the Birds
have a 38-32 record in these contests.
‘PEN PALS
It seemed as though Myrtle Beach relievers had found their
stride in a 28-game stretch from June 10-July 14. Right on
the heels of posting a collective ERA of 6.88 in the 20 games
prior from May 20-June 9, the Birds’ bullpen registered a
2.28 ERA (24 ER in 94.1 IP) during that 28-game span. With
the starting pitching going deeper into games, the bullpen
needed only to get an average of about 10 outs per contest.
However, the shorter outings by the Pelicans starting rotation
of late has seemed to tax the bullpen in the 14 games since.
During this most recent time frame, Birds relievers have a
5.64 ERA (37 ER in 59.0 IP). And whereas they were asked to
get about 10 outs per game during their strong stretch from
mid-June through mid-July, they’ve been required to retire
about 13 opponents per game during their struggles over the
last 14 contests.
PELICAN POINTS
The Pelicans have recorded consecutive series wins for the
first time since winning three straight sets in the middle of
May. The Birds won two out of three from Winston-Salem at
home from May 10-12 before three of four at Frederick and
two of three at Winston-Salem from May 13-19...Myrtle Beach
has struggled against Salem this season, with last night’s loss
dropping them to 2-8 against the Red Sox in 2016. In those 10
meetings, the Birds have been outscored 58-37, or an average
of 5.8-3.7 per game...RHP Preston Morrison makes his High-A
debut in Friday’s contest at Salem. The former TCU Horned
Frog went 9-4 with a 2.24 ERA with Low-A South Bend prior to
his promotion on Sunday.
