Grade Band: Transition Unit Topic: Being a Winner Summer Unit Lesson 9 Instructional Targets: Math: Apply and manage use of money in the context of real-world situations Classroom Activities/Lesson Plan: Lifetime Skills: What’s in My Wallet? This activity presents opportunities for counting out various amounts of money in your wallet. Provided are daily scenarios that require counting the money available and determining if there is enough to make the designated purchase. • Each team member will have a “wallet” (with a new amount of money in it each day) and a scenario card. Money will be pre-placed in each wallet prior to the activity. Consider the ability of each individual and the scenario that is to be presented when putting money in the wallet. Each scenario card can be used three separate times by simply changing the amount of money placed in the wallet. Money cards for bills and coins can be found in the ULS Instructional Tools / math pack: money. The scenario cards are presented in three sets of skills. o The first set presents scenarios with choices in dollar amounts only. In this set, bills in the wallet may be counted out with the team member. He/she will match the money counted to the money amount on the scenario card. If there is enough money to make the purchase, the team member may physically exchange the money with another. o The second set presents two cards for counting quarters and two cards for counting dollars. In this set, money in the wallet is counted and circled on the scenario card. Team members then determine if there is enough money to make the purchase on the scenario card. When counting the bills, using the “one-up” method is suggested. “One-up” money counting cards and instructions can be found in the ULS Instructional Tools / math pack: one-up cards. o The third set presents scenarios using both bills and coins. In this set, money in the wallet is counted and the amount is written on the scenario card. Team members then determine if there is enough money to make the purchase on the scenario card. If yes, the amount that would be used to pay will be counted out and written on the form. If no, a formula is provided to help team members determine how much more money is needed. Level 3 Team members will independently count amounts of money and determine amounts needed for a purchase. Differentiated Tasks: Level 2 Level 1 Team members will identify given money amounts in coins and bills. Team members will indicate a money amount and exchange this for a purchase. Team members will use the “one-up” method for making a purchase. Resources and Materials: Wallet Scenario cards © 1997-2012 n2y, Inc.
