Ensuring that customers arrive home safely After discontinuing service you will need to ensure that the intoxicated guest or guests arrive home safely without injuring themselves or others. Remember that the guest’s intoxication will last several hours and that your duty of care lasts until the guest gets home or to another safe place where he or she can sober up. Tips to get your intoxicated guests home safely: • If the intoxicated guest arrived with friends check to see if there is a member of the group who has not been drinking alcohol and can drive the guest home; • Offer incentives such as free parking if the individual or group leave the car overnight and find an alternate way home such as a taxi; • If the guest is alone ask if they have a relative or friend whom you could call to get them home safely; • Ask them to utilize alternative driving programs, public transit, or a taxi as alternatives; • Offer to pay for a taxi if they the guest is unable to pay for one; • If the guest refuses the alternate transportation options and gets in their car and drives away, write down the license number, direction they are travelling and contact the police; • Communicate to the rest of the staff regarding the intervention and to provide the details to your manager; • After the guest has left, keep an eye out for the ejected guest in case they decide to return to the establishment; • Record the incident in your logbook and try to obtain statements from at least two unbiased witnesses. www.servingitright.com Brought to you by
