PASTOR’S LETTER
Dear Friends,
After being away for 2 weeks, I returned to much news here at St. Hubert. Although I was aware of all
of it, it feels different now that I am back talking to people about all that has transpired.
We had 7 funerals during this time and overworked Fr. Fred a bit. Many of these people I anointed
before I left. Please pray for them and their bereaved families.
There were 2 other deaths that were extremely sad. Samantha Salvador, a 20-year-old parishioner, died
in a two-car crash on Thursday, February 23 on Interstate 65 in Indiana. She was a graduate of
Schaumburg High School, and a nursing student at Valparaiso University. She also was a Communion
minister here at St. Hubert. There is a GoFundMe page if you are interested in contributing to this
family who are members of our parish. Samantha’s wake is this weekend at Salerno Rosedale Chapels,
and her funeral Mass will be here this Monday at 11:00 a.m.
Jeanne Murphy, of our parish, also lost a son-in-law who died in a car crash in California. I do not have
the details of this situation, but ask all of us to pray for these families.
Back here at the parish we introduced our new Music Director, Ed Magistrado, at the Masses last
weekend with a special blessing at the 10:45 Mass. He seems happy to be here, and to date, I have heard
many wonderful comments from our parishioners.
On Wednesday, February 22, Mr. DeFrisco announced to our faculty and parents that he would not be
returning as Principal. He will be with us until June 30. As of this writing, I am meeting with a search
committee to look for a new principal. After 11 years with us, Mr. DeFrisco has a wonderful
opportunity to become the Assistant Superintendent of Schools with the Rockford Diocese. I will write
more about his time with us as the day draws closer.
As you can see, the next year will be one of transitions here at St. Hubert. Clearly, I will be writing more
about how we are transitioning with all the changes.
Most people do not like change; however, we have all lived long enough to know that this is part of life.
Our real question is not what will happen or who will replace whom? Rather, our question always
remains the same, no matter the external changes in our life. Where is God leading us as individuals and
as a community? If we seek this answer through prayer and dialogue, then we know that good things
await us. God wants only good things for us.
Lent is a good time for us to reflect on our transitions along with our Lenten themes. We learn that being
a disciple of Jesus includes creative suffering, conversion, and always new life. All these realities will
help us continue on our journey of faith.
Happy Lent.

MARCH 5, 2017
LITURGY CORNER
1st Sunday of Lent
"He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hungry." And no surprise! That's an incredibly
long time to fast. Undoubtedly Jesus' physical and emotional strength would have been extremely weak after
enduring such a marathon of abstinence. And isn't it interesting that the "tempter" should choose to appear at this
particular moment? When bread must have sounded better than ever, the devil comes and tests Jesus, saying,
"Command that these stones become loaves of bread."
How hard it must have been to resist! Surely, Jesus could have caved in. He could have shown the devil his power
--and had a bite to eat while he was at it--but he didn't. Instead, Jesus relied upon the word of God, and battled the
devil by holding fast to the truth. "One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes forth from the
mouth of God."
What an excellent model this provides for us. We too face temptation of various kinds and degrees. As the first
reading from Genesis reminds us, the "cunning" serpent has been slithering around humanity from the beginning
of time. Even when we have all that we need, the devil makes us want
more, or want different, than what we have. Today's Gospel calls Satan
"the tempter" for good reason. He tempts us to break God's law as Adam
and Eve did when they ate from the tree "in the middle of the garden." But
Jesus shows us the right response by battling the devil with the truth of
God's word. Whatever temptations might beset us, there is power in
clinging to the truths that we find in Scripture. In our moments of trial,
may we have the strength to claim these truths as our own and, like Jesus,
defeat the deceit of the devil.
RCIA HIGHPOINTS:
RITE OF SENDING for The RITE OF ELECTION and CONTINUING CONVERSION
Those present for the 9:00 liturgy this Sunday will participate with the RCIA and CMI
candidates and catechumens in a significant step in their conversion journey: the
Rite of Sending for Election and Continuing Conversion. In this ritual, having heard
the testimony of the sponsors, RCIA and CMI team members, and the Faith Community of
St. Hubert will send the candidates and catechumens to these rites.
Throughout this year these men, women, teens, and children have journeyed in the St. Hubert RCIA process. Though
the RCIA and CMI has instructional components, it is – at heart – not an educational program, but a discernment
process. Moved by an initial sense of God’s call to investigate being disciples of Jesus in the Catholic Church, the
RCIA journeyers test the “fit” of Catholic teaching as a way of life and worship for them. They have deliberated
with their sponsors and with the RCIA and CMI team. As they enter Lent, they have announced their desire to
receive the Easter sacraments.
Have the catechumens and candidates seriously entered into the Catholic way of life? Have their lives evidenced
conversion? Are they ready to be presented to the Bishop for election? The sponsors and team answer “Yes” and
will so testify during Sunday’s Rite of Sending and Continuing Conversion. Because the sponsors and team are
delegates and agents of the Faith Community of St. Hubert, the discernment process will be complete only when the
community affirms the RCIA and CMI members’ readiness.
When the catechumens and candidates celebrate the Rite of Election Sunday evening at the cathedral, they will be
part of a great throng of their peers from the many parishes of the Archdiocese. All of them are entering the final
period of preparation for the full initiation at the Easter Vigil
Please feel free to take a flyer of those in RCIA and CMI at the RCIA kiosk.
If you wish, you may want to write them a note.
Please continue to pray for all of them on this journey of faith.

“Isn’t it wonderful, how we grow to know and love
Jesus? When we realize in faith that Jesus Christ is the
definition of God, or, how God wishes for us to know

REV. RON ROLHEISER, OMI
Facing Our Demons in the Desert
We live lives of tortured complexity. Inside each of us
there is both a saint and a sinner and enough complexity
to write our own book on abnormal psychology. Our
hearts are a murky caldron of grace and sin, angels and
demons. Always, it seems, we are torn in a way that
leaves us feeling unsure, guilty, and tense. It is no
simple task being a human being.
daydreams, in those inner cassette tapes we play where
we are always the special one, the superstar, the one
singled out for greatness. This is the demon of selfpreoccupation and self-centeredness, forever urging us to
stand out, to be special. Loneliness is the demon of
unhealthy restlessness. This is a demon of fear which
torments us by telling us constantly that, at the end of the
day, we will be alone, unloved, excluded, outside the
circle. It makes us pathologically restless and desperate,
looking always for someone or something that can take
our loneliness away. Unbridled sexuality is the demon of
obsession, addiction, lust. It makes us believe that sex (or
some such pleasure) is a panacea, the final salvation, or,
if not that, at least the best this world can offer. Its urges
us to bracket everything else – sacred commitment,
moral ideal, and consequences for ourselves and others –
for a single, furtive pleasure. It is a demon with ten
thousand faces obsessing us all, whether we admit it or
not.
Henri Nouwen, in commenting on this, once described
himself this way: “My fears and resulting fatigue over
the last three years might well be diagnosed as a lack of
single-mindedness, as a lack of simplicity. Indeed, how
divided my heart has been and still is! I want to love
God, but also to make a career. I want to be a good
Christian, but also have my successes as a teacher,
preacher, or speaker. I want to be a saint, but also enjoy
the sensations of the sinner. I want to be close to Christ
but also popular and liked by people. No wonder that
living becomes a tiring enterprise.” (The Genesee Diary).
This could be a description of any soul, yours, mine.
Jung was right, energy is not always friendly. It brings
with it a host of demons.
Paranoia is the demon of bitterness, anger, and jealousy.
It makes us believe that life has cheated us, that we have
not been given our just place, that the celebration is
always about others and never about us. This demon fills
us with the urge to be cynical, cold, distrustful, and
cursing. Woundedness is the demon that tells us that our
innocence and wholeness is irretrievably broken and that,
for us, it is too late. The best we can do now is to take
consolation in comfort, food, drink, pornography, drugs,
or some such thing. Finally, the last demon in this family
is that of joylessness, the demon of self-pity which tells
us that joylessness is maturity, that cynicism is wisdom,
and that bitterness is justice. This is the demon that keeps
us from entering the room of celebration and joining the
dance.
Demons, Jesus tells us, are to be confronted in the desert.
The desert is that place where one does battle with Satan.
What exactly does that mean? Is Satan, the devil, to be
conceived of as a personified force, a fallen archangel,
Lucifer? Or is Satan a code name for that vast range of
inner disturbances (addictions, scars, paranoia, fear,
bitterness, and sexual wounds) that habitually torment
us? What exactly are the principalities and powers that
are beyond us? That question is not so important here.
Whether the devil is a person, an addiction, or a paranoia,
in the end we still need to do battle at exactly the same
place. Most of us are not called upon to confront the
Satan of classical exorcisms. Rather we meet Satan in the
same way that the prodigal son and his older brother met
him, in weakness and bitterness. Ultimately these are the
demons that must be met. The venue for that meeting,
scripture tells us, is the desert.
All of these demons are inside every one of us. To stare
them in the face is to enter the desert. A scary thing?
Yes, but the scriptures assure us that, if we do muster the
courage to face them, God sends angels to minister to us
and these angels bring along calm, restfulness, patience,
empathy, humility, solicitude, joy, playfulness, and
humor.
To go into the desert means to stare our inner chaos in
the face. What demons live inside this chaos? The
demons of the prodigal son and his older brother – the
demons of grandiosity, loneliness, and unbridled
sexuality and the demons of paranoia, woundedness, and
joylessness. What faces do these take?

A Transitional Housing Program for Homeless Families
January 2017 Update
Family #28
Our family is a single African American mom who was fleeing
a domestic violence situation. She has three sons ages: 14, 10, 8, and two
daughters 9 and 16. She currently works part time as a CNA, and is
currently looking for more clients.
Our new mom is now a grandmother! Her eldest daughter recently had a
baby girl and is getting acclimated to being a mother. Our mom is so excited
and very supportive of her daughter.
Things are getting better for this family even as they cope with the loss of
their father. The eldest daughter will return to school in February and is
waiting for clearance from the doctor to go back to work. Her baby is doing
well although they found out she has the sickle cell trait. She reported that the
baby’s father is not helping her, so for now, the daughter will stay with her
mom.
Current Goals:
¨ Save at least 3 to 6 months’ rent.
¨ Save 90% of income taxes.
¨ Make sure that her daughter is linked with services for her and her baby.
¨ Take advantage of the Women’s Program at Harper to pursue a career
in the medical field.
¨ Apply for SSI for death benefits.
Family #29
Our mom is a single white female with a three year old son who became
homeless due to low income status. She was staying with her son’s
father, but they were not getting along and they lived with his parents.
The child’s father does not work and is not financially stable. She and her
son stayed with friends for about two months before she went to the
shelter in November, 2016.
Not much has changed recently with our mom. She is still working hard at her
pizza job, hoping and praying for the promotion. She was referred to the job
developer to see if he can find her a better paying job; however, she truly
believes the pizza owner will promote her when he can. She is also working
on a special project that will pay extra money. She is now receiving medical
benefits and SNAP – a food assistance program. She has also applied for
Action for Children and is looking for an affordable day care center for her
son. She reports that he is very good with computers. Our mom has been
working very hard and was able to save $500.00. She is very excited to
have money in her savings account.
Current Goals:
¨ Save at least 3 to 6 months’ rent.
¨ Save 100% of income taxes.
¨ Continue to advocate at her current job for a promotion needed to make
more income.
¨ Continue to keep mental health stabilized.

Justice Cluster for your continued support!
